MADISON, N.J. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team headed to the fourth quarter tied with host Drew University in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening before the Rangers outscored the Greyhounds by 15 points in the final 10 minutes to post a 64-49 final over the Hounds.
The Blue and Grey had two players in double figures led by senior forward Nadine Ewald, who had her 11th double-double of the season and 33rd of her career with 18 points and 10 rebounds to go with three steals and a pair of assists. Ewald moved up to 19th in program history with 1,116 points, and she is fourth all-time with 827 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kayla Yoegel tied her career high with 13 points to go along with six boards and two assists.
Senior guard Maddie Capuano netted nine points with two rebounds and two steals while senior guard Karlie Brogan had four points, eight rebounds and a pair of steals. Freshman guard Morgan Amy contributed six assists and two points while junior forward Jordan Beneducci had two assists and two points and freshman forward Emily Markowski added one point.
The Rangers scored the first points of the contest before Yoegel and Ewald scored for a 4-2 Moravian lead. The Hounds had a 10-6 edge after Beneducci scored with 2:33 left in the quarter but Drew netted the final seven points of the quarter to lead 13-10 after 10 minutes of action.
Capuano cut it to a one-point game to start the second quarter before the Rangers pushed the edge to six points at 22-16 with 5:07 before the intermission. The Blue and Grey finished the quarter with an 11-4 run. Capuano had given the Greyhounds a 27-24 lead with 34 seconds left in the period but a late basket by the Rangers had Moravian leading by one at the break.
Yoegel pushed the edge back to three points to start the third quarter. Drew answered with a 7-0 run to retake its six-point edge at 35-29. The Hounds responded with a 9-0 run as a three-point play from Ewald with 3:42 left in the period put the Blue and Grey back in front, 36-35. After the Rangers moved ahead again, a free throw by Capuano knotted the score at 39-39 after 30 minutes of action.
Drew scored the first four points of the final quarter before Yoegel connected on a jumper. The Rangers scored the next 10 points to build a 53-41 lead with 4:59 remaining. Brogan snapped the run but Drew would eventually push the edge to 18 points before a three-pointer from Yoegel, the Greyhounds only trey of the contest, finished the scoring as the final buzzer sounded.
Moravian is slated to return to the court on Saturday, January 25 when the Greyhounds host Goucher College in a Landmark Conference contest beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
