Moravian Men Win 5th Landmark Indoor Championship

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's indoor track & field team captured its fifth Landmark Conference championship in the six-year history of the conference and the program's eighth indoor conference title by winning the 2013 Landmark Conference meet hosted by Susquehanna University Saturday.

The Greyhounds had a team score of 192, leading the host Crusaders by 21 points as Susquehanna accumulated 171 points. The United States Merchant Marine Academy finished third as a team with 88 points while Juniata College was fourth with 39 points.

Moravian was led individually by junior Kristopher Joint, who was named the Field Athlete of the Year. Joint captured the triple jump title for the third consecutive year with a meet record and ECAC qualifying mark of 14.42 meters (47 feet, 3 ¾ inches). He also won the long jump at an ECAC qualifying mark of 6.70 meters (21 feet, 11 ¾ inches), and Joint was fifth in the high jump, clearing 1.80 meters (five feet, 10 ¾ inches).

Senior Donald Noble captured the mile run for the third straight year in 4:22.72 and the 5,000-meter run for the third consecutive championship in 15:34.61 to be named the Co-Track Athlete of the Year with Kwane Hayle from Susquehanna, the second straight year Noble has won the award. Head Coach Jesse Baumann and his assistant coaches were also honored as the Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.

The Greyhounds finished the meet with a total of seven first place finishes as junior David Cariello won the pole vault at 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5 ¼ inches) and the 60-meter hurdles in an ECAC qualifying time of 8.52 seconds, and senior Jonathan Heberling won the high jump for the second straight year at a height of 1.90 meters (six feet, 2 /34 inches) in addition to Joint's and Noble's four combined victories.

Moravian also completed the meet with five ECAC qualifying performances as senior Travis King was second in the triple jump at a qualifying mark of 13.94 meters (45 feet, nine inches) and freshman Jason Fuehring took third in the event with a qualifying distance of 13.51 meters (44 feet, four inches) in addition to the marks from Joint and Cariello.

Freshman Ryan Karnopp was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 4.25 meters (13 feet, 11 ¼ inches) while freshman Chris Voda finished third at 4.10 meters (13 feet, 5 ¼ inches). It was one of six events that the Greyhounds took the top two spots and one of two that Moravian swept the top three positions to clinch the team title.

Heberling was the runner-up in the long jump at 6.54 meters (21 feet, 5 ½ inches) while Cariello tied for fourth at 6.52 meters (21 feet, 4 ¾ inches), King finished sixth at 6.48 meters (21 feet, 3 ¼ inches), freshman Albert Myers placed ninth at 6.35 meters (20 feet, ten inches) and Fuehring took tenth with a leap of 6.10 meters (20 feet, ¼ inch). Fuehring was second in the high jump at 1.85 meters (six feet, ¾ inch) while sophomore Chris Ossont was fifth in the triple jump at 12.73 meters (41 feet, 9 ¾ inches).

Sophomore Dillon Farrell was the runner-up in the mile run in the mile run in 4:24.14 and the 5,000-meter run in 15:34.10. Farrell also pulled off an unusual double with senior Jacob Donchez and Dylan Marton and sophomore Alec Duncan as the quartet was fourth in the 4x800-meter relay in a time of 8:43.80, and then immediately turned around and placed third in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:36.37 to finish the meet.

Myers was third in the 60-meter dash in 7.13 seconds while King finished sixth in the event at 7.35 seconds. Myers also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash in 23.52 seconds while sophomore Travis Dorsa was seventh in 23.82 seconds. Freshman Gavin Bailey took fourth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 52.40 seconds while Dorsa was eighth in 53.09 seconds and freshman Tyler Dwyer finished ninth in 53.40 seconds. Junior Craig Arner took fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.33 seconds while Bailey finished sixth in 9.56.

Dorsa and Myers combined with senior Justin Taylor and sophomore Darren Johnson to place second in the 4x200-meter relay in a time of 1:36.61. Moravian's 4,000-meter distance medley relay team of Duncan, Dwyer, Marton and Donchez placed third in a time of 11:11.40.

In the throwing events, senior Tyler Potterton finished third in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 14.32 meters (46 feet, 11 ¾ inches) while junior Timothy Lorah was seventh at 13.28 meters (43 feet, seven inches), senior Phillip Torres took ninth at 12,00 meters (39 feet, 4 ½ inches) and sophomore Jeffrey Gallagher finished tenth at 11.68 meters (36 feet, 4 ¼ inches).

Lorah led Moravian in the shot put with a third place finish of 13.27 meters (43 feet, 6 ½ inches) while junior Frank Yannotta took fifth at 12.84 meters (42 feet, 1 ½ inches), junior Kyle Kersting was sixth at 12.687 meters (41 feet, 7 ¾ inches), freshman Matt Dill tied for eighth at 11.77 meters (38 feet, 7 ½ inches) and freshman Jacob Fritz was tenth in the shot put at 11.76 meters (38 feet, seven inches).

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Friday, March 1st and Saturday, March 2nd at the 2013 ECAC Division III Championships at the New York City Armory with the final opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships in two weeks.
