Moravian’s Cheong Named Landmark Conference Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College sophomore Melissa Cheong has been named the Landmark Conference Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for her performance last week.

Cheong opened the 2015-16 indoor season by placing fifth in the women's indoor pentathlon at the non-scoring Lehigh University Fast Times Before Finals meet last Friday evening as she racked up 2,787 points in the five-event competition. Her point total was the seventh-best in the Moravian record book.

Cheong opened the action last Friday evening with a time of 9.66 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to earn 777 points, and she garnered another 747 points for an ECAC qualifying height of 1.61 meters (5-3.25) in the high jump. Cheong then picked up 417 points in the shot put with a mark of 8.27 meters (27-1.75), and she finished the evening with 614 points in the long jump with an ECAC qualifying distance of 5.20 meters (17-0.75) and 232 points for a time of 3:15.87 in the 800-meter run.

"We spent all of last year trying to convince Melissa that she could excel in the indoor pentathlon, and she agreed to give it a shot this year," commented Head Coach Jesse Baumann. "It makes a lot of sense since so many of her strong events are the pentathlon events, as you can see when she got two ECAC marks during the meet. It was a great debut for her not only this season but in the event. In fact, she nearly cleared our indoor high jump school record."

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Friday, December 11 at the Wagner College Shootout that will be competed at the Ocean Breeze Park Track & Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York.
