Cheong Honored as Landmark Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week

TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College sophomore Melissa Cheong has been honored as the Landmark Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her performance last week.

Cheong, who earned her second Landmark Conference Field Athlete of the Week after receiving the honor back on December 7, won the high jump at the 24th Annual John Covert Classic hosted by Lehigh University by clearing a Moravian and Landmark Conference height of 1.68 meters (5-6). Cheong's jump, which broke Krisa Murray's '95 mark of 1.63 meters (5-4.25) set back in 1993, moved her into a tie for seventh on the Track & Field Results Reporting System list in the event. The top 17 student-athletes in each event will qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships in March. Cheong also placed tenth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.63 seconds on Saturday.

"Mel, by her own admission, didn't have the greatest meet by her standards last week and was a little down on herself, so we were happy to see her have a great day," stated Head Coach Jesse Baumann. "After how well she finished in the high jump outdoors last year, jumping this height wasn't surprising. However, as with anyone it's one thing to show the potential in practices, it's another to carry that over to a meet. She now owns both of our high jump school records, and last year that jump would have qualified her for NCAAs. Obviously she's aiming for bigger jumps, but clearly that's a tremendous sign to be jumping that well even before February."

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, February 6 when the squad heads to the Susquehanna University Invitational in Selinsgrove.
