Field Hockey Falls to Conference Foe Scranton, 2-1

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Moravian College field hockey team fell to Landmark Conference foe The University of Scranton, 2-1, Wednesday night.

The Royals would put the pressure on in the 15th minute as sophomore midfielder Alyssa Fania got two shots off in five seconds, one was blocked and senior goalkeeper Catherine Gottlieb made the save. Freshman forward Alyssa Whitman took a pass from Fania, and tapped it in from the right point to put Scranton up 1-0 in the 28th minute of the contest. At the end of the half, Gottlieb came up with a save, and senior defender Stephanie Pezzello made a defensive save to keep the score at 1-0, Scranton.

In the second half, sophomore midfielder Catherine Duffin would get a shot on goal in the 44th minute, but sophomore goalie Krista Mundy made the save. Two minutes later Keriann Badessa almost tied up the conest, but Mundy made the save again. Sophomore forward Kathleen Keale for Scranton push its lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute after putting a rebound shot in the back of the cage. Two minutes later freshman forward Kelly O'Donnell would get four shots off in 40 seconds, but none would get past the goalkeeper.

Freshman midfielder Rebecca Hamel took a penalty stroke in the 68th minute to try and get the Hounds on the board, but Mundy came up with the save. O'Donnell would break-up the shutout for Moravian with a goal off a rebound from sophomore midfielder Catherine Duffin in the 69th minute to make the score 2-1, Scranton.

Gottlieb tallied ten saves in the loss while Mundy came up with 12 in the victory.

The Royals held the edge in shots, 24-22 while Moravian held the advantage in penalty corners at 15-11.

The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday, October 6th as they host Landmark Conference foe Juniata College. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Rocco Calvo Field.
