Top Ten of 2012-13 - #6 - Women's Track & Field Team Wins 2 More Landmark Conference Titles

Women's Track & Field Champions as story #6 in 2012-13

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- --- Moravian College continues its countdown of the top 10 honors and moments of the 2012-13 season today with a look at our No. 6 highlight – The women's track & field team sweeping the Landmark Conference Indoor and Outdoor team championships for the sixth straight year.

The Landmark Conference began competition in 2007-08, and the Greyhounds have captured all 12 track & field team championships in the history of the conference, winning two more titles last year.

"It is just an unreal accomplishment for me to see us sweep the Landmark Conference titles again," said senior All-American Micah Leonard. "I almost have to pinch myself with the realization that my hard work over the years paid off in a such a big way."

Susquehanna University hosted the indoor meet in Selinsgrove for the sixth consecutive year and once again the Greyhounds finished on top, scoring 176 points to the Crusaders 127 points. Head Coach Jesse Baumann and his staff of assistant coaches - Dustin Rommel, Mike Lawyrk, Bob Luciano, Joanna Kovacs, Steve Rahn, Alyssa Wert and Gary Zack were selected as the Landmark Coaching Staff of the Year.

Moravian also had Leonard earn the Landmark Indoor Field Athlete of the Year award for the third straight meet while freshman Corinne Glass was honored as the Landmark Co-Rookie of the Year.

Leonard won the long jump and triple jump, the latter for the fourth straight year, to earn Landmark All-Conference First Team honors, and she was on the Second Team for a runner-up finish in the high jump. Glass made the First Team after winning the 200-meter dash and combining with sophomores Morgan Redmond, Brielle Sutter and Brianna Wright to win the 4x400-meter relay. Glass was also on the Second Team for a runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash.

Wright also earned First Team honors with a win in the 60-meter dash while junior Allison Vanek was on the First Team for a win in the pole vault and on the Second Team for a runner-up in the 4x800-meter relay with junior Jennifer Smilgis and sophomores Devon Bedell and Alyssa Tallon.

Redmond was on the Second Team after placing second in the 60-meter hurdles while Sutter earned Second Team honors for a runner-up showing in the 200-meter dash. Sophomore Hailey Kester was second in the pole vault to earn Second Team accolades.

"We're fortunate to have some very talented and versatile sprinters and jumpers who were able to score the brunt of the points for our team, Baumann said. "Micah Leonard obviously has been a tremendous asset and reason we were able to win, but so many of our sprinters like Brielle Sutter, Corinne Glass, and Morgan Redmond were willing to run up to 5 races to help the team. Our success is really thanks to a selfless, team-first attitude from a number of athletes who are willing to sacrifice PR's and personal benchmarks when they're at their peak in order to maximize the team's chances of succeeding."

The team traveled to Goucher College in Towson, Maryland on April 27th and 28th for the outdoor championship. Moravian scored 264 points, defeating Susquehanna by 114 points for the title.

Leonard again led the Greyhounds as she earned Field Athlete of the Year honors for the second time this year, which was seventh in the Top 10 of 2012-13 countdown. Leonard was an All-Conference First Team selection by winning the long jump and triple jump, the latter for the fourth straight year, and she was on the Second Team for a runner-up finish in the high jump.

Sutter was named the Track Athlete of the Year after winning the 400-meter dash and leading the winning 4x100-meter relay squad of Redmond, Glass and freshman Christelle Reglas. Sutter also earned Second Team honors with runner-up finishes in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, the long jump and the 4x400-meter relay with Redmond, Glass and Vanek. Glass was named to the First Team with wins in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes while Kester won the pole vault and sophomore Allissa Hoffman captured the javelin to earn First Team honors.

Redmond was on the Second Team after placing second in the 100-meter hurdles while Vanek was on the Second Team for a runner-up finish in the pole vault. Bedell made the Second Team as the runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while freshman Karlee Corvasce was second in the javelin to make the Second Team.

"We were really proud to see new people step up after we lost a big senior class," Baumann stated. "Many new distance runners started to rise to the occasion. After graduating one of the best pole vaulters in the history of NCAA Division III, both Ally Vanek and Hailey Kester stepped up to earn their first ever All American awards in the event. We lost a key senior leader in Lisa Williamson to graduation, but Brielle Sutter stepped right in, set a new school record, qualified for NCAAs, and showed she could be a future leader for this program. There is a common saying in sports right now, "next person up" and our team really adopted that this year."

Number five on our countdown will be announced on Friday, July 26th.
