Women Capture 7th Straight Landmark Outdoor Championship

KING'S POINT, N.Y. --- The Moravian College women's track & field team captured its seven consecutive Landmark Conference Outdoor Championship, defeating runner-up Susquehanna University, 311-177.5, in the two-day meet hosted by The United States Merchant Marine Academy.

The Greyhounds, who have won all 14 Landmark titles indoors and outdoors in the seven-year history of the conference, also completed what team calls the triple crown for the second time in three years by winning the cross country title last November in addition to the indoor and outdoor track and field championships.

Head Coach Jesse Baumann and his staff of assistants - Jonathan D'Ottavio (throws), Elijah Trusty (jumps), Mike Lawyrk (pole vault), Bob Luciano (javelin), Steve Rahn (sprints/hurdles), Alyssa Wert (sprints/relays), Gary Zack (javelin) and Micah Leonard (jumps) – were named the Landmark Coaching Staff of the Year. Freshman Lauren Suelke  was honored as the Rookie of the Year while junior Jenny Kratch was the Co-Field Athlete of the Year.

The Greyhounds won six of the 14 events competed on Sunday. Junior Morgan Redmond won a pair of titles, capturing the 100 meter hurdles in an ECAC qualifying time of 15.32 seconds and winning the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.19. Junior Brianna Wright won the 100 meter dash in an ECAC, Landmark Conference and meet record time of 12.19 seconds, which is also the second fastest time in school history, while sophomore Corinne Glass won the 200 meter dash in an ECAC qualifying time of 25.71 seconds. Junior Devon Bedell won the 3,000 meter steeplechase with an ECAC qualifying time of 11:57.22.

Wright, Redmond, Glass and junior Brielle Sutterwon the 4x100 meter relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 48.56 seconds.

Suelke finished second in the high jump clearing 1.52 meters (four feet, 11.75 inches) to garner eight points. She was also the runner-up in the triple jump at 10.47 meters (34 feet, 4.25 inches), and freshman Kiara Bright placed third at 10.44 meters (34 feet, three inches) to earn a total of 14 points in the triple jump.

Kratch was the runner-up in the shot put with an ECAC qualifying mark of 11.71 meters to earn eight points, and she was also second in the discus with a toss of 33.27 meters (109 feet, two inches). Freshman Jackie Finnegan was fourth in the discus at 32.75 meters (107 feet, five inches) and sophomore Tyler Clore was fifth with a mark of 31.29 meters (102 feet, eight inches) to give the squad 17 points from the event.

Moravian had five other runners in the 100 meter dash with Wright as the squad earned 29 points in the race. Glass was third in 12.81 seconds while Suelke took third in 12.95 seconds. Sophomore Christelle Reglas was fifth in a time of 12.97 seconds while Redmond placed sixth in 13.06 seconds and Sutter took eighth in 13.19 seconds.

Sutter was the runner-up in the 400 meter dash in an ECAC qualifying time of 58.53 seconds while Glass placed fourth in 1:00.82 for 12 points total in the race. Sutter was also second in the 200 meter dash with an ECAC time of 25.86 seconds while Wright was third in 26.08 seconds and Reglas was eighth in 26.74 seconds for 25 points towards the teams score.

Freshman Meghan Newman was the runner-up in the 100 meter hurdles in 16.20 while junior Giana Vecchio placed fifth in 17.57. Newman also took sixth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:15.15 while Vecchio was sixth in 1:15.39 as the Greyhounds scored 37 points in the two hurdle races.

Freshman Erin Love was fifth in the steeplechase in 12:35.96 while junior Alyssa Tallon took sixth in 13:53.14 to pick up 17 points in the event with Bedell's title. Senior Jennifer Smilgis was third in the 800 meter run in 2:30.54 while freshman Sarah Hughes placed fifth in 2:33.98 as the Greyhounds scored 10 points in the race.

Junior Emily Lambright was the runner-up in the 5,000 meter run in 18:51.08 while junior Claire Del Casale was third in 19:11 .46 and Bedell took sixth in 19:36.33 to give Moravian another 17 points.

In the final race on the track, Moravian's 4x400 meter relay team of Jennifer Smilgis, senior Amanda Smilgis, senior Jennifer Parodi and freshman Casey Raymond finished fifth in 4:46.73 for the final four points of the meet.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action at the 2014 ECAC Division III Championships to be hosted by RPI on May 15 & 16.
