Moravian Earns Two More Wins at Spring Games in Florida Including 10-Inning Victory Over Wartburg

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Moravian University softball squad picked up two more wins at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Florida on Monday as the Greyhounds defeated Cabrini University, 6-2, before rallying from a four-run deficit in the tenth inning to walk off with an 8-7 victory over Wartburg (Iowa) College. 

How It Happened – Cabrini

  • The Hounds took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning against the Cavaliers in the first game of the day at Legends Way Ballfields. Senior outfielder Victoria Smith drew a leadoff walk and raced home on a bases loaded RBI single to center field from senior outfielder Cameron Cassidy. Senior catcher Brooke Wehr followed with an RBI single to center field as well as freshman third baseman Holly Walter crossed the plate
  • Cassidy connected on a triple and scored on an error in the top of the fourth to extend the Blue and Grey's lead to 3-0
  • Cabrini scored its two runs in the bottom of the fourth to close within a run at 3-2
  • Moravian answered back with a four-run sixth inning. Freshman designated player Lindsey Gawrys led off the frame with a double, and she scored when Wehr ripped her ninth tenth career triple. Wehr came in on the next at-bat when sophomore outfielder Mya Zettlemoyer connected on an RBI double, and Zettlemoyer scored the final run of the game on an infield RBI single by senior shortstop Maddisen Bieber
  • Junior Madison Hummel earned her second win of the year in the circle as she allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two batters

How It Happened – Wartburg

  • The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against the Knights as Zettlemoyer reached on a fielder's choice and raced home from second on an RBI single up the middle from Gawrys
  • Moravian extended the advantage to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth frame as sophomore second baseman Ajala Elmore reached first on another fielder's choice and scored when freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham connected on the first home run of her career
  • Wartburg scored once in the top of the sixth inning to get on the scoreboard, and the Knights plated two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to force extra innings
  • Starting with the international tiebreaker that places a runner on second base in the top of the eighth frame, neither team scored in the eighth or ninth innings
  • The Knights pushed four runs across the plate in the top of the tenth to take a 7-3 edge
  • The Hounds started the bottom of the tenth with Bieber on second base. Gawrys connected on her first career home run, a two-run shot to left center to close the gap to two runs. Moravian then loaded the bases with two singles and an error before Cassidy raced home on a passed ball to make it a one-run contest. Cunningham followed with an RBI single to bring in Walter to knot the score at 7-7, and Wehr reached on an error that allowed Elmore to cross the plate with the winning run
  • Cunningham improved to 2-0 in the circle, and she had nine strikeouts and four walks in ten innings of action

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 21 hits in the two contests with Gawrys going 5-for-8 with three RBIs, two runs, a double and her homer
  • Seven different Greyhounds had two hits on the day with Wehr collecting two RBIs, a run and a triple. Walter and Zettlemoyer each had two hits and two runs while Cassidy, Smith, Cunningham and sophomore first baseman/designated player Emily Silberman all had two hits. Cassidy contributed a triple, two runs and an RBIs while Smith added a triple and a run and Cunningham had three RBIs and a homer
  • Wehr is now tied for tenth in school history with nine career triples
  • Elmore contributed a triple and scored twice
  • The Hounds left 22 runners on base in the two games, 11 in each contest
