Moravian Sweeps Rival Muhlenberg in Non-Conference Action at Blue & Grey Field

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball squad swept rival Muhlenberg College, 4-1 and 4-0, in non-conference action at Blue & Grey Field Thursday afternoon. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Mules jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-out, solo homer
  • The Greyhounds answered with a pair runs in the bottom of the second frame to take a 2-1 edge. Freshman third baseman Holly Walter led off with a single and raced home from second on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Mya Zettlemoyer. Senior shortstop Maddisen Bieber gave the Blue and Grey the lead for good with an RBI single to bring Zettlemoyer across the plate
  • Moravian tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Walter was hit by a pitch, and Zettlemoyer and senior catcher Brooke Wehr drew walks to load the bases. Bieber dropped a two-RBI single down the left-field line to score Walter and Zettlemoyer to make it 4-1
  • Junior Madison Hummel tossed the complete game in the circle for the Hounds as she allowed a run on four hits to go with one strikeout 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in the nightcap. Walter reached on a fielder's choice before freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham connected on a two-run homer to left field, her third home run of the season. Cunningham has seven hits on the season with four for extra bases including her three homers
  • The Greyhounds doubled their advantage to 4-0 with two more runs in the top of the third inning. Sophomore second baseman Ajala Elmore reached on an error with one out, and sophomore designated player Emily Silberman followed with a two-run homer off the top of the fence in left field, her team-leading ninth home run of the season
  • Cunningham scattered seven hits in the circle and struck out two batters as she improved to 13-0 on the season with third shutout of the spring

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 15 hits in the doubleheader with senior outfielder Victoria Smith going 3-for-3. Walter was 3-for-5 and scored three times while Zettlemoyer went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI
  • Silberman finished the afternoon with a pair of hits, two RBIs, a run and her homer while Bieber had two hits and three RBIs
  • Wehr collected one hit to move into sole possession of fourth all-time in school history with 206 career hits while Cunningham and freshman first baseman Lindsey Gawrys both had one hit
