Greyhounds Wrap Up Florida Trip with 10th Straight Victory

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Moravian University softball squad posted their 10th win of the season with a couple of victories on their final day of competition at the PFX Games in Florida, defeating the University of Mount Union 8-1 and blanking Cornell (Iowa) College 9-0 in six innings at the Legends Way Complex on Friday.

How It Happened – Mount Union

  • Senior shortstop Maddisen Bieber singled up the middle to bring senior catcher Brooke Wehr across the plate to give the Hounds a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning
  • The Greyhounds plated three runners in the top half of the third frame when senior right fielder Victoria Smith reached on a fielder's choice and freshman first baseman Lindsey Gawrys scored. Freshman pinch hitter Ren Herschman singled up the middle resulted in two RBIs and put Moravian up 4-0
  • In the top of the fourth inning, Bieber was credited with another RBI with her second single up the middle to push the Blue and Grey lead to 5-0. Sophomore second baseman Ajala Elmore hit a fly ball down the to right field line that allowed her to hit an inside the park home run and give the Greyhounds an 8-0 lead
  • The Raiders countered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fourth frame, which would be the final run of the game with Moravian claiming an 8-1 victory
  • Junior pitcher Madison Hummel started in the circle and allowed six hits and one earned run. Freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham entered the game in the seventh inning where she faced three batters and had one strikeout in one inning. Hummel improves to 5-0 overall on the year

How It Happened – Cornell (Iowa)

  • The Greyhounds got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when Elmore singled through the right side for two RBIs then Elmore stole second base and, on the throw to second, Bieber trotted home to give Moravian a 3-0 lead
  • Wehr plated the fourth run of the game in the second frame off a single up the middle that scored freshman Holly Walter to push the edge to 4-0
  • In the third inning, Elmore had a bunt single and advanced to second on an error then moved to third on another error that brought Bieber home for a 5-0 lead. Smith grounded out but recorded an RBI when Elmore crossed the plate to add another run, 6-0
  • Gawrys ended the game in the sixth inning with a three-run home run to left field to put the score at 9-0
  • Freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham earned the start, striking out four and allowing just two hits in six innings of work. Cunningham earned the victory and improved to 5-0 on the season 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 20 hits on the day as the Greyhounds held their counterparts to eight hits and outscored them 14-1
  • Three Greyhounds ended the day with four hits apiece, led by Gawrys who went 4-for-7 and a perfect 3-for-3 performance versus Cornell, tallied her second home run of the season, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Bieber went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs and Wehr was 4-for-9 with a triple, an RBI and scored a run
  • Elmore posted a 3-for-7 mark today with an inside the park home run, four RBIs and three runs scored while Smith had a base hit, scored twice and drove in two runs
  • Senior outfielder Cameron Cassidy had one hit and scored a run the day while sophomore left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer drew two walks, earned a base hit and scored once
  • Walter finished with two walks, a single and a run scored and Herschman added a hit and two RBIs
