Moravian Posts a Pair of Shutouts at Spring Break Games in Florida

LEESBURG, Fla. --- The Moravian University softball team earned another two victories on Thursday, improving to 8-0 on the year after defeating Concordia Moorhead (Minn.) College 5-0, followed by an 8-0 win over Adrian (Mich.) College in five innings at Sleepy Hollow Fields.

How It Happened – Concordia Moorhead (Minn.)

  • After a couple of scoreless innings, sophomore designated player Emily Silberman crushed a three-run home run to left-center fielder to put the Blue and Grey ahead of the Cobbers, 3-0
  • In the sixth frame, the Greyhounds would tack on two more runs with sophomore second baseman Ajala Elmore doubling to left field that scored senior shortstop Maddisen Bieber from second base. Freshman pinch hitter Ren Herschman hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought Elmore across the plate for the final run of the game
  • Junior pitcher Madison Hummel started in the circle and recorded six strikeouts and allowed just two hits for her third shutout of the short season. Hummel improves to 4-0 overall on the year

How It Happened – Adrian (Mich.)

  • The Greyhounds got on the scoreboard in the second inning when freshman third basemen Holly Walter singled up the middle that scored Bieber to give Moravian a 1-0 advantage
  • Senior catcher Brooke Wehr crushed a solo homer to left field which led the Blue and Grey to a five-run third inning. Bieber doubled down the left-field line to plate two runners followed by a sacrifice fly to right field by Elmore that brought freshman pinch-runner Jessica Gonzales-Forder across the plate and was capped off by senior right fielder Victoria Smith grounding out to second base which scored Bieber and extended the Moravian lead to 6-0
  • In the bottom of the fourth frame, Bieber reached on an error with the bases loaded, which resulted in the final two runs of the game to score
  • Freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham earned the start, striking out three and allowing just two hits in four innings of work. Senior pitcher Robin McCabe made her season debut and recorded two strikeouts and did not allow a hit in one inning. Cunningham earned the victory and improved to 4-0 on the season

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 10 hits on the afternoon as the Greyhounds held their counterparts to four hits
  • Senior outfielder Cameron Cassidy was 2-for-4 on the day with a double as Bieber and Elmore went 1-for-4 on the day. Bieber scored three times, plated two RBIs and was walked twice as Elmore contributed a double, two RBIs and a run scored
  • Walter scored twice and hit a double while Silberman and Wehr each recorded home runs for their lone hits and sophomore Mya Zettlemoyer scored three runs, walked twice and had one base hit
  • Freshman first baseman Lindsey Gawrys went 1-for-3 today with three runs scored and three walks as freshman pinch hitter Sage Snyder recorded her first collegiate hit wearing the Blue and Grey
