Moravian Needs Extras in Game 1, Sweeps Catholic in Road Conference Doubleheader

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian University softball squad swept The Catholic University of America on the road in a Landmark Conference doubleheader, a 10-7 win in a nine-inning game one and a 4-1 victory in game two, to improve to 4-0 in conference competition.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning of the opener. Senior catcher Brooke Wehr drew a leadoff walk, and freshman first baseman Lindsey Gawrys singled with one out. After the second out of the inning, sophomore designated player Emily Silberman ripped a two-RBI single through the left side as Wehr and Gawrys scored
  • The Cardinals tied the contest at 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the second frame
  • Moravian moved back ahead with a five-run fourth inning to take a 5-2 advantage. Silberman drew a leadoff walk and freshman Sage Snyder came in to pinch run. After a fielder's choice, Snyder raced home from second base on an RBI single by freshman third baseman Holly Walter. Sophomore left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer connected on an RBI single as Walter came in from second base. Senior outfielder Cameron Cassidy put down a bunt single before Wehr hit an RBI single through the left side to score Zettlemoyer. Gawrys finished off the inning with a two-RBI double as Cassidy and Wehr scored
  • Catholic answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth, and the Cardinals plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings
  • Neither team was able to get a runner on base in the eighth inning
  • The Blue and Grey scored three times in the top of the ninth. Zettlemoyer connected on a leadoff double before freshman Jessica Gonzalez-Forder came in to pinch run. After a sacrifice bunt, Wehr reached second on a fielder's choice to put two runners in scoring position for senior shortstop Maddisen Bieber, who ripped an RBI single to score Gonzalez-Forder with what ended up being the winning run. Gawrys reached on an error as Wehr crossed the plate while Silberman finished off the scoring with an infield single to score Bieber
  • Sophomore Madison Hummel made the start in the circle for Moravian, and she tossed 6.1 innings with a strikeout. Freshman Madi Cunningham came in for the final 2.2 innings and had two strikeouts as she improved to 10-0 on the year

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Cardinals struck first in game two, scoring what would be their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the third frame to take a 1-0 edge
  • Moravian would take the lead for good after putting together a three-run fourth inning. Sophomore Ajala Elmore started off the fourth with a single through the left side and then advanced to second on a wild pitch before Cunningham connected on her second home run of the season with a two-run shot down the left-field line to put the Hounds up 2-1. Senior outfielder Victoria Smith followed that up with a triple to right field and then scored on a Walter groundout to give Moravian a 3-1 lead
  • The Blue and Grey added another run in the top of the sixth inning when Silberman homered to left field and extended the Greyhounds' advantage to 4-1 to end the scoring for the game
  • Cunningham started the contest in the circle for the Hounds, and she threw a complete game, allowing seven hits, one earned run and three strikeouts to win her second game of the afternoon to improve to 11-0 this season

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 20 hits in the doubleheader to outhit the Cardinals 20-15
  • Gawrys and Silberman each turned in four-hit performances, with Gawrys going 4-for-9 with two doubles, three RBIs and scored a run while Silberman went 4-for-7, including her seventh homer of the year, to go with four RBIs and scored a run
  • Bieber recorded three hits, going 3-for-9 with an RBI and one run while Walter and Zettlemoyer each contributed two hits. Walter also contributed two RBIs and scored once as Zettlemoyer had a double, an RBI and a run.
  • Wehr added one hit with three runs scored and an RBI as Smith's lone hit of the day was a triple, which she then scored. Cassidy and Elmore each had a base hit and a run scored as Cunningham's only hit of the day was her second home run of the season
