Byrne Records 900th Career Victory with Two Wins at PFX Games

Clermont, Fla. --- The Moravian University softball squad secured two more wins on Wednesday with a 6-0 victory over Neumann University, followed by a 2-1 win over No. 11 Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wisc.) to earn Head Coach John Byrne his 900th career victory.

How It Happened – Neumann

  • Moravian jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with freshman first baseman Lindsey Gawrys tripling to right field that scored a pair of Greyhounds, then Gawrys advanced to score on a throwing error to made it a 3-0 game. Senior right fielder Victoria Smith drove in a runner to put the Blue and Grey ahead 4-0 after one frame
  • Senior catcher Brooke Wehr also tripled and added an RBI, scoring sophomore designated player Emily Silberman to extend the Hounds lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning
  • Sophomore shortstop Maddisen Bieber recorded an RBI with a walk in the bottom of the sixth frame that scored the final run of the game
  • Junior pitcher Madison Hummel made the start in the and had four strikeouts and allowed four hits and three walks in the contest to improve to 3-0 on the year

How It Happened – No. 11 Milwaukee School of Engineering

  • After a scoreless first inning, the Raiders got a run on the board in the bottom of the second frame
  • Silberman tied the game at 1-1 with a single to center field that brought Gawrys across the plate
  • Sophomore left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer grounded out to second base that advanced Wehr to second base and brought home freshman third baseman Holly Walter which would end up being the game-winning run, putting the Hounds ahead 2-1
  • Freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham got the start in the circle and recorded four strikeouts, allowing four hits an unearned run and a walk. Cunningham improved to 3-0 in her freshman campaign

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 18 hits on the day with 11 in the first contest as the Greyhounds outhit their opponents, 18-9
  • Wehr went 3-for-7 on the day with an RBI, one run and a triple while Gawrys went 3-for-5 with a triple, a double, three RBIs and scored a run
  • Silberman turned in a 3-for-6 performance, including going 2-for-2 versus Neumann with a run scored and an RBI with Walter going 3-for-4 in the doubleheader with a triple, three runs scored and two walks
  • Zettlemoyer went 2-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored while senior center fielder Cameron Cassidy went 2-for-5 with a stolen base
  • Byrne has become the 5th active Division III coach and 9th coach all-time to reach the 900 win milestone
