No. 16 Hounds Use Long Ball To Sweep Juniata to Open 2022 Landmark Conference Slate

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The No. 16 ranked Moravian University softball team connected on six home runs to begin the 2022 Landmark Conference season with a sweep at Juniata College Saturday afternoon, winning 7-4 and 11-4 after trailing early in both games. 

How It Happened – Game 1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior catcher Brooke Wehr connected on a two-out, solo home run to left field, her third homer of the season and the 31st of her career
  • The Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to move ahead 3-1
  • The Blue and Grey scored twice in the top of the third to knot the score at 3-3 as Wehr ripped an RBI single to right field. Freshman first baseman Lindsey Gawrys also had an RBI single to right field in the inning
  • Moravian took a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning as sophomore second baseman Ajala Elmore raced home on a passed ball
  • Juniata tied the contest again at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth frame with the Eagles final run of the opener
  • The Hounds took the lead for good in the top of the sixth as Gawrys drew a bases loaded walk to push senior shortstop Alexis Agrapides across the plate with the winning run
  • Moravian finished the scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh as Elmore ripped a solo home run to start the inning and freshman pinch hitter Ren Herschman had an RBI ground out for the final run
  • Freshman Madi Cunningham improved to 6-0 in the circle as she allowed four runs on 13 hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts
  • The game was delayed in the fourth inning as a thunderstorm moved through the area

How It Happened – Game 2

  • The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the first inning of the second game to take a quick 2-0 advantage
  • Moravian countered with two runs in the top of the second frame to knot the score at 2-2. Elmore led off with a single and scored on a two-run homer by sophomore designated player Emily Silberman
  • The Greyhounds took the lead for good with a three-run top of the third for a 5-2 edge. Elmore hit a three-run homer, her third home run of the season and fourth of her career
  • Juniata scored its final two runs of the contest in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-4 contest
  • The Blue and Grey would get the two runs back in the top of the fifth when Gawrys ripped her third homer of the season, a two-run shot
  • The Hounds finished off the scoring with four runs in the top of the seventh. Agrapides scored the first run of the frame on a wild pitch while Elmore had an RBI ground out that scored senior third baseman Maddisen Bieber. Silberman then connected on her second two-run homer of the game to drive in the final two runs. Silberman now has three home runs this spring and six in her career
  • Senior Robin McCabe made the start in the circle for Moravian and allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk to go with one strikeout in three innings of action. Cunningham came in to toss the final four innings, earning her seventh victory of the year, as she allowed two hits and struck out four batters

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 24 hits in the doubleheader with Wehr going 4-for-7 with three runs, two RBIs and a homer
  • Four Hounds contributed three hits apiece with Elmore going 3-for-6 with four runs, four RBIs and two home runs. Bieber was also 3-for-6 with three runs while Gawrys was 3-for-7 with two runs, four RBIs and a homer. Agrapides added three hits and scored twice in her first action of the season
  • Silberman connected for home runs on both of her hits on the day to go with four RBIs and a pair of runs while junior outfielder Victoria Smith and sophomore outfielder Mya Zettlemoyer both collected two hits with Zettlemoyer scoring once
  • Cunningham and freshman Jessica Gonzalez-Forder both had one hit for the Blue and Grey
