Moravian Earns Semifinal Victory over Scranton, Falls to Susquehanna in Landmark Title Game

SCRANTON, Pa. --- The second-seeded Moravian University softball squad earned a 4-2 victory over the third seed The University of Scranton in the Landmark Conference Semifinal game before falling to the top seed Susquehanna University in the Conference Championship, 9-3, at Magis Field hosted by Scranton on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened – Game 1 – Landmark Semifinal vs. The University of Scranton

  • The Royals started off the game by scoring twice in the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead
  • It took until the bottom of the fourth for the Greyhounds to get on the board, tying the semifinal game at 2-2. Freshman first baseman Lindsey Gawrys started the inning off with a single to left field before sophomore second baseman Ajala Elmore reached base safely on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second. Sophomore designated player Emily Silberman singled to right-center field for an RBI that scored Gawrys. Freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly to center field that brought Elmore across the plate
  • The Greyhounds took the lead in the bottom of the sixth frame after Gawrys led off the inning with a single to left field and Elmore was walked, which brought Silberman to the plate. Silberman hit a two-RBI single to left-center field that cleared the bases and gave Moravian a 4-2 lead
  • Scranton went down in order to end the game and the Greyhounds advanced to the 2022 Landmark Conference Championship game to take on Susquehanna
  • Cunningham started in the circle and allowed seven hits and two earned runs, and four strikeouts for her 13th complete game of the year 17th victory of her freshman campaign

How It Happened – Game 2 – Landmark Conference Championship vs. Susquehanna University

  • Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with senior catcher Brooke Wehr leading the game off with a single through the left side and advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop Maddisen Bieber. Silberman plated Wehr with an RBI single to center field followed by an RBI single from freshman third baseman Holly Walter to put the Hounds ahead 2-0 in the top of the first
  • The River Hawks scored four runs in the bottom of the first to go ahead 4-2 after the first frame
  • The Greyhounds added one run in their half of the second inning. Sophomore left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer reached base safely on an infield single, followed by a throwing error by Susquehanna that allowed senior outfielder Cameron Cassidy to be safe at first and both runners advance a base after the ball went out of play. Wehr connected on a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Zettlemoyer trotting across the plate to bring Moravian within a run, 4-3
  • Susquehanna tacked on one run in the third and scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-3 edge
  • Junior pitcher Madison Hummel started the title game for the Hounds and threw two-plus innings and gave up five earned runs on five hits and walked five batters with one strikeout. Cunningham entered in relief and completed the game, pitching four innings for six hits, four earned runs, two strikeouts and a walk

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 16 hits on the day with five in their victory over Scranton and 11 hits in the championship game
  • Five Greyhounds ended the day with multi-hit performances, led by Silberman, who was 5-for-7 with four RBIs. Gawrys went 2-for-6 and scored three times while Walter was 2-for-5 and drove in a run. Zettlemoyer posted a 2-for-3 mark with a run scored
  • Wehr was 2-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored in her final game wearing the Blue and Grey. Wehr finishes her career with 158 career games with 222 hits, which ranks second in program history, to go with 561 at-bats (third), 168 runs (second), 36 doubles (tied for fifth), 11 triples (tied for third), 36 home runs (school record), 147 RBIs (third all-time), 388 total bases (school record), 38 walks and 17 stolen bases with a .396 career batting average (seventh) and a .692 slugging percentage (third) at the plate. In the field, she has 484 putouts, 30 assists, nine runners caught stealing and a .990 fielding percentage (seventh).
  • Bieber collected one hit with it coming in the championship game as she finished her career with 172 hits, 118 runs, 80 RBIs, a .365 batting average and a .459 slugging percentage at the plate. In the field, Bieber holds the school record with 321 assists, which she reached in the championship game versus Susquehanna, and 217 putouts and a fielding percentage of .942.
  • Elmore scored two runs for the Hounds and Cunningham recorded an RBI
  • Moravian appeared in the postseason for the 27th time in 29 seasons under the direction of 29-year Head Coach John Byrne, missing in just his first campaign in 1994 and in 2020 when the postseason was canceled by the pandemic
  • The Greyhounds were also playing in the conference tournament for the 22nd consecutive season and 25th time overall, and the Hounds are the only team to play in all 14 Landmark Conference Tournaments
  • The Blue and Grey have reached the conference championship game in 22 of 25 appearances in the conference tournament since 1995 with 12 in the Landmark Conference, seven in the Commonwealth Conference, which were all championships, and three in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Moravian made the title game for the third time in the Landmark Conference Tournament as the second seed while the other nine appearances have been as the top seed
