Hounds Sweep Drew on the Road to Remain Undefeated in Landmark Conference Action

MADISON, N.J. --- The Moravian University softball team improved to 6-0 in Landmark Conference action this season with a sweep at host Drew University Friday afternoon as the Greyhounds won 4-2 and 6-1. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning
  • The Hounds answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to move in front, 3-1. Sophomore designated player Emily Silberman led off with a single before senior Cameron Cassidy came in to pinch run. Cassidy eventually tied the game when she trotted home after freshman third baseman Holly Walter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Sophomore outfielder Mya Zettlemoyer drove in freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham with an RBI groundout as Moravian moved into the lead for good, and senior catcher Brooke Wehr added an RBI groundout to plate senior outfielder Victoria Smith
  • The Greyhounds added a run in the top of the fifth inning when freshman first baseman Lindsey Gawrys led off with a single and raced home from second base on an RBI double off Silberman's bat
  • Drew tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth inning but would not get any closer
  • Cunningham improved to 12-0 in the circle with the complete game win that saw her register four strikeouts 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Rangers again scored first in the second game with a run in the bottom half of the third frame
  • Moravian answered with six runs in the top of the fifth to earn the sweep. Smith led off with a single, and Zettlemoyer followed with a bunt single to put Smith at third base. Freshman pinch hitter Ren Herschman connected on a sacrifice fly as Smith tied the game. After an out and a walk, Gawrys ripped a three-run homer, her sixth home run of the season, to make it 4-1. Sophomore second baseman Ajala Elmore hit a double before Silberman launched her team-leading eighth homer of the spring, a two-run shot to finish the scoring
  • Junior Madison Hummel gave up an unearned run and struck out four batters for her eighth win of 2022 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 13 hits in the doubleheader with Silberman going 5-for-6 with three RBIs, a double and a homer. Gawrys had two hits with her homer and three RBIs while Wehr and Smith each added two hits with Smith scoring twice
  • Elmore and Zettlemoyer both collected one hit and scored once while Cunningham and senior shortstop Maddisen Bieber each crossed the plate once
