Wehr Breaks Career Home Run Record as Greyhounds Sweep DeSales to Finish 2022 Regular Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball squad swept DeSales University, 5-4 and 12-1 in five innings, at Blue & Grey Field Monday afternoon to close out the 2022 regular season. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second with three unearned runs
  • The Greyhounds got a run back in the bottom half of the second inning to cut the deficit to 3-1. Freshman first baseman Lindsey Gawrys singled with one out and raced all the way around the bases on an RBI double to right-center field by sophomore second baseman Ajala Elmore
  • The Blue and Grey took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-3 edge. Senior catcher Brooke Wehr led off with a single and senior shortstop Maddisen Bieber was hit by a pitch before Gawrys reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases as the Bulldogs attempted to get Wehr at third base. Elmore brought in Wehr with an RBI sacrifice fly, and sophomore designated player Emily Silberman followed with a two-RBI single to plate Bieber and Wehr as Moravian took the lead. Freshman Sage Snyder came in to pinch run for Silberman, and she scampered across the plate on an RBI single from freshman pinch hitter Jessica Gonzalez-Forder after the Hounds had loaded the bases again
  • DeSales answered in the top of the sixth inning as the Bulldogs pulled within a run at 5-4
  • Junior Madison Hummel made the start in the circle for Moravian, and she had one strikeout in five-plus innings of action to improve to 12-2 on the season. Freshman Madi Cunningham pitched the final two innings to register her first career save, and she also posted a pair of strikeouts 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • DeSales took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a solo home run to start the scoring in the nightcap
  • Moravian scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-1 advantage. Sophomore outfielder Mya Zettlemoyer was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Wehr ripped a two-run homer to right field for the lead. The homer was the 36th of Wehr's career, breaking the tie she had been in with Jenn Dalickas '15 for the last month and 13 games since tying the mark on April 5 with three homers in a doubleheader with Delaware Valley University. Bieber followed with a double and raced home on an RBI single from Gawrys, and Silberman connected on an RBI single to score Gawrys. Senior outfielder Cameron Cassidy came in to run for Silberman, and she trotted across the plate on an RBI single up the middle by senior outfielder Victoria Smith for the final run of the inning
  • The Greyhounds extended the edge to 12-1 with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wehr and Bieber had back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, and Gawrys hit an RBI double to center field as Wehr crossed the plate. Elmore connected on an RBI single to right field to score Bieber while Gawrys scampered home on a wild pitch. Silberman drew a walk before Cunningham hit a three-run homer to center field, her fifth home run of the season. Snyder drew a walk as a pinch hitter and scored the final run on a wild pitch
  • Cunningham returned to the circle to start the second contest, and she had four strikeouts to improve to 16-1 on the season. Senior Robin McCabe came in to toss the final inning and registered a strikeout

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 20 hits in the doubleheader with Wehr going 4-for-8 with three runs, two RBIs, a double and her record-breaking homer, her seventh round-tripper of 2022. Bieber and Elmore were both 3-for-6 on the day with Bieber adding three runs and two doubles while Elmore had three RBIs, a double and a run
  • Gawrys went 3-for-7 with three runs, two RBIs and a double while Silberman and Smith both had two hits with Silberman contributing three RBIs and a run and Smith driving in one run
  • The homers by Wehr and Cunningham give the Greyhounds 30 home runs on the season, just three behind the record set by the 2012 squad
