Brogan Nets 24 as Women's Basketball Tops Elizabethtown

LANCASTER, Pa. --- Junior guard Danielle Brogan tossed in a career high 24 points to lead the Moravian College women's basketball team to a 91-77 victory over Elizabethtown College on the opening day of the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall College Saturday.

The Blue Jays, who fall to 1-1 on the season, jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a jumper and a three-pointer from senior guard/forward Katy Fogel while the Greyhounds first points came on a three-pointer by Brogan at the 18:58 mark.  Brogan connected on another three-pointer 27 seconds later to put Moravian, 2-0 on the year, up 6-5.  Junior guard Katie O'Rourke made a lay-up with 16:59 left in the first half to extend the Greyhounds' lead to 12-7.

Senior guard Amanda Kreuder connected on a pair of free throws at 15:12 to give Moravian an 18-9 advantage while a lay-up by O'Rourke at 13:34 pushed the Greyhounds' lead to 24-13.  Elizabethtown would score eight straight points with sophomore guard Taylor Santor connecting on a lay-up at 12:04 to pull the Blue Jays within three points at 24-21.  Elizabethtown would get within two points, 28-26, on a three-pointer from freshman guard Rachel Forjan at 8:45.

Brogan would help Moravian push the lead back to double digits when she hit on a jumper with 3:27 left in the first half as the Greyhounds' would lead 38-28, and junior forward Laura Jordan hit a jumper for a 42-32 advantage with 45 seconds before the intermission.  Elizabethtown would finish the half with a 4-0 run as Moravian headed to the locker room with a 42-36 advantage.

The Greyhounds were 17-for-38 (44.7 percent) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, and Moravian was two-for-eight on three-pointers and a perfect six-for-six at the foul line.  Moravian had just seven turnovers in the first half while the Blue Jays committed 12 turnovers.  The Blue Jays were 14-for-36 (38.9 percent) from field, two-for-nine on three-pointers and six-for-six at the foul line in the first half, and Elizabethtown had a 23-20 edge in rebounds in the first 20 minutes of action. 

Fogel would score to open the second half as well as Elizabethtown pulled within four points at 42-38.  Sophomore forward Alexis Wright hit a free throw for the Greyhounds' first point of the second half, and she would hit a lay-up at the 17:38 mark to give Moravian a 49-38 lead.    Brogan would hit a jumper at the 13:44 mark to give Moravian a 17-point lead at 59-42. 

The Greyhounds' largest lead of the game of 18 points, 82-64, would come with 4:37 left in the contest on a lay-up from Jordan.

Moravian was 16-for-31 (51.6 percent) from the floor in the second half, and the Greyhounds made 16-of-20 free throw attempts and one-of-two three-pointers in the final 20 minutes.  Each team had 11 turnovers in the second half while Moravian had a 24-16 advantage in rebounds over the last 20 minutes to finish the game with a 44-39 edge on the boards.  The Blue Jays struggled shooting the ball in the second half, making just 12-of-33 field goal attempts (36.4 percent), and Elizabethtown was four-for-seven behind the three-point line and 13-for-15 at the foul line in the second half. 

Brogan tied her career high with seven rebounds to go with her game high 24 points as Moravian had a total of three players in double figures.  Wright tied her career high with 21 points to go with eight boards and three assists while O'Rourke finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.  Jordan and Kreuder each had eight points and four rebounds with Kreuder adding three assists while freshman guard Karine Polgar added seven points and three boards.  Junior forward Ericka Blair had five rebounds and four points for the Greyhounds while freshman guard Emily MacDonnell tossed in four points.

Forjan led three Blue Jays in double figures with 23 points and three rebounds while junior guard/forward Taylor Kreider had a double-double with 17 points and 13 boards to go with three steals.  Senior guard Nadine Yunginger had 12 points and four rebounds while Fogel had nine points and three boards for Elizabethtown.  Santor finished with eight points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Greyhounds will take on Lycoming College on the second day of the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament at Franklin & Marshall on Sunday, November 18th at 1:00 p.m.
