BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University Head Women's Volleyball Coach Shelley Bauder has announced her retirement at the end of the current academic year after 32 years leading the Greyhound program.
Since arriving at Moravian in April 1993, Bauder guided the Hounds to a 575-428 record, 20 winning seasons, three trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament, 19 conference tournament appearances including nine Landmark Conference Tournament berths and seven ECAC Division III South Tournament appearances.
"Shelley has been a steadfast, loyal fixture in the Athletic Department for the past 32 years," commented Director of Athletics Mary Beth Spirk. "As a volleyball coach, her record speaks for itself. Shelley's success goes far beyond her coaching history. She has been a mentor for not only her former and current players, but also for coaches and staff in our department. Personally, she was a great colleague and wonderful friend. While her departure will leave a large gap in the day-to-day operations of Moravian Athletics, we wish Shelley all the best as she enters the next chapter."
Bauder was honored as the American Volleyball Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 1997, the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth League Coach of the Year in 1996 and the Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year in 2001. She coached five AVCA All-Americans, 13 AVCA All-Region players, 37 All-Conference honorees in her career including 27 First Team selections, and Bauder also coached one Conference Player of the Year, five Conference Rookies of the Year and two Conference Specialists of the Year.
Bauder's student-athletes also excelled off the court with 112 Conference Academic Honor Roll selections, one Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete and two College Sports Communicators Academic All-Americans including the CSC College Division Academic All-American of the Year in 1999.
Bauder has been an active member of the Moravian Athletic Department during her tenure including serving as an assistant women's basketball coach, PA Announcer for women's and men's basketball games, a member of the Hall of Fame Committee, advisor for Athletes of Faith and leader of the Greyhounds' Step-Up Bystander Training annually for all sophomore student-athletes. She is an NCAA trained facilitator, and Bauder was a former NCAA Regional Representative, AVCA Top 25 Poll voter and member of the AVCA All-America Selection Committee.
Outside of Moravian, Bauder is a former PIAA volleyball and basketball official. A Minneapolis, Minnesota native, Bauder resides in Coopersburg with her husband Tim, and they have two grown children, Kaysie and Caleb.
Bauder earned her undergraduate degree in physical education from Bethel (Minn.) University in 1984 where she played volleyball, basketball and softball as a student-athlete, and she served as Athletic Director, Head Volleyball and Basketball Coach at Pinebrook Junior College from 1986 to 1992 before joining the Greyhounds. Bauder earned a Master of Education from East Stroudsburg University in 1993, and she will be going back to school full time to finish her Masters of Chaplaincy at Moravian Theological Seminary.
Moravian will conduct a national search for its next head coach.
