YORK, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad fell to Stevens Institute of Technology, 87-84 in double-overtime, on the second day of the 15th Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at York College of Pennsylvania Sunday afternoon after entering the fourth quarter with an 11-point lead.
How It Happened
- Neither team scored in the opening five minutes of the game before senior forward Emily Markowski hit the first points of the contest for the Hounds. The Ducks eventually took a 9-3 lead and would hold a 12-9 edge after 10 minutes of action
- The Greyhounds netted the first five points of the second quarter on a jumper from graduate student forward Tessa Zamolyi and a three-pointer by senior guard Morgan Amy to take a 14-12 lead. The Blue and Grey pushed the advantage to 23-17 on another three-pointer by Amy with 4:36 before the intermission, but Stevens closed the gap back to two points at 25-23. Moravian answered and took a 34-25 lead on a three-pointer from Amy before heading to the locker room with a 34-27 edge
- The Hounds controlled the third quarter with the advantage reaching double digits at 41-31 on a lay-up by Amy. Graduate student forward Kayla Yoegel hit a jumper for a 13-point edge at 51-38 while sophomore forward Brielle Guarente finished the quarter with a jumper and a 53-42 advantage
- Guarente hit another jumper at the 9:21 mark of the fourth quarter to give the Blue and Grey their largest of the contest at 14 points, 56-42. The Ducks countered with a 13-0 run to pull within a point at 56-55 with seven minutes left in regulation. Stevens would tie the contest at 61-61 before Moravian connected on six straight free throws, two each from senior guard Ashley Robinson, Markowski and Amy to give the Hounds a 67-61 edge with 1:59 to go. Stevens closed within a point and then hit a three-pointer with 20 seconds left to knot the score at 69-69. Amy took a three-pointer just before the final buzzer but came up short to force overtime
- During the first overtime, the squads traded points until Moravian took a 76-73 lead after a free throw from Markowski with 2:07 on the clock. The Ducks netted the final three points of the extra session to tie the game gain at 76-76. The Greyhounds had a chance again to win just before the buzzer; however, Yoegel's jumper missed
- Stevens scored first in the second overtime before Amy hit two free throws and Yoegel sank a lay-up to give Moravian an 80-78 edge. The squads continued to trade points with the Hounds knotting the score for the 12th time in the game at 84-84 on a free throw by Yoegel with 1:30 to go. The Ducks netted three points to take an 87-84 lead. Amy got off a three-pointer just before the buzzer but her shot to tie came up short of the rim
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had five players in double figures with Amy netting a career-high 24 points to go with three assists, a pair rebounds and two steals. Amy was selected to the All-Tournament Team
- Yoegel recorded her fourth career double-double with 15 points and a career-best 17 rebounds to go with a pair of steals while Zamolyi had her third straight double-double with 13 points and 14 boards to go with three steals
- Markowski tossed in 13 points to go along with five rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocked shots while Robinson scored a career-high 10 points while grabbing two rebounds
- Guarente finished with eight points and two boards while junior forward Sam Osorio grabbed seven rebounds
- The Greyhounds shot 26-for-84 from the floor, 4-for-16 beyond the three-point line and 28-for-41 at the foul line as the squads combined to shoot 69 free throws
- Moravian forced the Ducks into 23 turnovers while committing just 18 turnovers in the 50 minutes of the contest
