Greyhounds Top Susquehanna on Senior Day and Play4Kay Day

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team recorded a 71-65 victory over visiting Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall Saturday afternoon as the Hounds closed out the 2022-23 season with Senior Day and the annual Play4Kay game to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. 

How It Happened

  • The Hounds scored the first two baskets of the game on a lay-up from graduate student-forward Tessa Zamolyi and a jumper by senior guard Ashley Robinson. The River Hawks scored eight of the next 11 points to take an 8-7 lead. The Blue & Grey moved back ahead at 11-10 on a lay-up from senior forward Emily Markowski, and junior forward Sam Osorio beat the buzzer at the end of the quarter for a 15-12 advantage after 10 minutes of action
  • Osorio also started the second period with a lay-up to give Moravian a five-point edge. The Greyhounds kept that lead until the 2:28 mark when the River Hawks tied the score at 29-29. Senior guard Morgan Amy drained a three-pointer to put Moravian back ahead; however, Susquehanna scored the final six points of the first half to head to the locker room with a 35-32 edge
  • Zamoyli began the third quarter with a lay-up, and she would connect on a three-pointer as the Blue and Grey tied the game at 37-37. Two baskets from Osorio had the Hounds leading 41-37, but the River Hawks kept it close with three more ties during the quarter. Amy hit another three-pointer for the final points of the third period as the Greyhounds led 53-50 after 30 minutes of play
  • Susquehanna netted the first four points of the fourth quarter for a one-point edge while Zamolyi countered with a three-point play to put Moravian back on top. The River Hawks eventually led by three points at 59-56 with 4:45 to go before the Greyhounds ran off eight straight points. Zamolyi started the run with a lay-up before Markowski drained a three-pointer and connected on a three-point play after a steal and fast break bucket to give the Hounds a 64-59 edge with 3:29 to go. Susquehanna closed within a point at 64-63 before Zamoyli hit a lay-up and the Blue & Grey sank five free throws in the final 56 seconds to seal the victory
  • Before the game, the Greyhounds honored Amy, Markowski, Robinson and Zamolyi as they closed out their careers in a Moravian uniform at home

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had four players in double figures with Zamolyi netting a team-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds while Osorio finished with 17 points, six boards and four steals. Amy and Markowski both had 11 points with Amy adding five assists and Markowski contributing seven rebounds and a pair of steals
  • Robinson tossed in six points to go with three assists while graduate student forward Kayla Yoegel had four points and four rebounds. Junior guard Reganne Flannery dished out a pair of assists
  • The Hounds shot 25-for-61 from the field, 5-for-11 beyond the three-point arc and 16-of-18 at the charity stripe
  • The Greyhounds forced the River Hawks into 22 turnovers while committing 13 miscues, and Moravian had a 13-10 advantage on the offensive boards but was outrebounded 34-30 overall

Wearing Pink

  • The Greyhounds donned their pink jersey for the 16th consecutive season and improved to 11-5 all-time when in pink
  • Moravian has won the Kay Yow Cancer Fund's annual award for Division III for 14straight year and heading into 2023, the Hounds have raised $198,076
