Moravian Rallies from 10-Point Third Quarter Deficit to Top Goucher on the Road

TOWSON, Md. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad rallied from a 31-21 deficit with just under seven minutes to play in the third quarter by outscoring host Goucher College, 39-17, over the final 16:50 to earn a 60-48 Landmark Conference win Wednesday evening. 

How It Happened

  • The Gophers hit a free throw to open the scoring while junior forward Sam Osorio connected on a lay-up for Greyhounds' first points and a 2-1 edge. Goucher answered with five straight points for a 6-2 advantage, and the Gophers stretched the lead to 13-7 after 10 minutes of action
  • Goucher scored first to open the second quarter as well for a 15-7 advantage before Moravian closed within three points at 15-12 on a free throw from graduate student forward Kayla Yoegel at the 7:58 mark. The Hounds were down three again at 20-17 after a free throw from senior guard Morgan Amy; however, the Gophers scored the final four points of the half to head to the locker room with a 24-17 advantage
  • The Gophers hit the opening basket of the second half while graduate student forward Tessa Zamolyi countered with a three-point play. Goucher extended the edge out to 10 points at 31-21 at the 6:50 mark, and the Gophers were still up eight points at 37-29 with 4:10 to go in the third quarter. The Greyhounds finished the period with a 9-0 run and Zamolyi scored twice, sophomore forward Brielle Guarente hit a lay-up and Amy sank a three-pointer to put the Blue & Grey ahead again at 38-37 after 30 minutes of play
  • Moravian continued the run into the fourth quarter with two more baskets, one each from Guarente and Zamolyi for a 42-37 advantage. The Gophers closed within two points at 44-39, but the Greyhounds would go up by nine, 53-44, after a three-pointer from Zamolyi and two free throws by Amy. Osorio made the edge 11 points, 57-46, with 2:09 remaining, and she would also sink the final two free throws of the night to set the final score 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had three players in double figures led by Zamolyi, who had 23 points and 15 rebounds to go with two steals. The double-double was Zamolyi's 16th of the season as she joined Kathy Beck DeKorte '91 and Alexis Wright '15 as the only players in school history with 16 or more double-doubles in a season. DeKorte had 16 in 1990-91 and 19 in 1991-92 while Wright recorded 17 double-doubles in both 2014-15 and 2015-16
  • Amy finished with 14 points and three rebounds while Osorio had 10 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the winter and the tenth of her career. Osorio also had three steals in the game
  • Senior guard Ashley Robinson contributed six points and three steals while Guarente had four points and four boards and Yoegel tossed in three points to go with six rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior forward Emily Markowski dished out five assists to go with two rebounds and a pair of blocked shots
  • The Greyhounds shot 20-for-66 from the field including 16-of-33 in the second half, 3-for-12 on three-pointers and 17-for-23 at the foul line
  • The Hounds had a 46-37 advantage on the boards including 23-10 on the offensive glass, and the Blue & Grey forced the Gophers into 28 turnovers while making 17 miscues
