Moravian Comes Back From Early Deficit But Unable to Hold on at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad rallied from a double-digit first half deficit to take a lead in the third and fourth quarters before falling to DeSales University, 63-52, in non-conference action in the annual before Thanksgiving contest between the squads in Billera Hall. 

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds opened the game with a 2-0 lead before the opening tip-off as graduate student forward Kayla Yoegel hit two free throws for an administrative technical foul. The Bulldogs answered with 13 straight points after the tip to build a 13-2 advantage. Graduate student forward Tessa Zamolyi netted the Hounds' first field goal with 4:26 left in the first quarter, and the Blue & Grey closed back within six points at 20-14 on a jumper from senior guard Morgan Amy with 18 seconds left in the opening quarter. DeSales added a free throw to lead 21-14 after 10 minutes of action
  • Junior forward Sam Osorio hit a lay-up to start the second quarter to make it a five-point game. The Bulldogs netted the next seven points to push the advantage back to 12 points at 28-16 with 7:39 to play in the half. Moravian countered with an 8-0 run to pull within four points at 28-24. DeSales pushed the lead back to nine points before the Greyhounds scored the final four points of the half with two late free throws by Yoegel making it 35-30 DeSales edge at the intermission
  • Moravian began to close the gap early in the third quarter, getting within a point at 36-35 on a three-pointer from Yoegel. The Hounds took their first lead of the contest at the 7:56 mark on a three-point play from Osorio that had the Blue & Grey up 38-36. Sophomore forward Brielle Guarente hit a jumper for a 40-36 edge, but DeSales responded to tie the contest at 42-42. Yoegel would hit a jumper late in the third quarter as Moravian led 46-44 after 30 minutes of action
  • The Bulldogs scored the first basket of the fourth quarter before Markowski sank two free throws. The Hounds would move ahead 50-49 on a lay-up by Zamolyi, and Osorio made it 52-49 Moravian with a lay-up at the 5:24 mark. However, that would be the last points the Greyhounds scored as DeSales finished the game with a 14-0 run

Inside the Numbers

  • The Greyhounds had two players in double figures with Yoegel tossed in a game-high 13 points and added three rebounds and a pair of assists. Osorio netted 11 points to go with 12 rebounds for her sixth career double-double while Zamolyi finished with a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with eight points
  • Guarente also had eight points with six rebounds, three assists and three steals while Amy tossed in six points. Senior forward Emily Markowski contributed four points and four boards while junior guard Reganne Flannery had two points in her season debut
  • Moravian was 21-for-69 from the floor and a perfect 9-for-9 at the foul line, but the Hounds were just 1-for-13 beyond the three-point arc
  • The Greyhounds did finish the evening with a 45-39 edge in rebounds
