Moravian Rallies in Fourth Quarter to Defeat Drew

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad rallied from a six-point deficit with four and a half minutes remaining to post a 55-52 win over visiting Drew University in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall Wednesday evening. 

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds scored the first four points of the contest on a pair of lay-ups from senior forward Emily Markowski. The Rangers answered with four points, and Drew would take a 7-6 edge. The Blue & Grey finished the quarter with a 10-2 run as two free throws from senior guard Ashley Robinson to hold a 16-9 advantage after 10 minutes of action
  • Graduate student forward Tessa Zamolyi connected on a jumper to open the second quarter as Moravian's lead stretched to nine points, and the Hounds had a 22-14 edge after a lay-up from Zamolyi with 5:33 until the intermission. However, Drew finished the second quarter and a 12-2 run to head to the locker room with a 26-24 edge
  • Zamolyi tied the game to start the third quarter, and the Greyhounds retook a 33-31 lead on a three-pointer from senior guard Morgan Amy. The Rangers would go back up by three points while a jumper from graduate student forward Kayal Yoegel put Moravian ahead 37-36 with 2:35 on the clock in the third. Drew hit final free throw in the last seconds of action as the squads were knotted at 37-37 after 30 minutes of play
  • Junior forward Sam Osorio gave the Blue & Grey a two-point edge with a lay-up a minute into the fourth quarter, but Drew went on an 10-2 run to take a 47-41 lead with 5:05 to play. The Rangers still had a six-point edge at 49-43 with 4:24 to go when Moravian scored nine straight points on a pair of lay-ups from Osorio, a three-pointer by Yoegel and a jumper in the lane from junior guard Reganne Flannery to lead 52-49 with 1:38 on the clock. Drew tied the contest with 1:19 to go on a three-pointer; however, Zamolyi answered with a jumper 25 seconds later, and she hit a free throw with 16 seconds to go for a 55-52 edge. The Greyhounds' defense stepped up with Flannery blocking a three-point shot with four seconds remaining to seal the victory

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had three double-doubles on the night with Zamolyi recording 15 points and 10 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season, Yoegel adding 13 points and 10 boards for her fifth career double-double and second this winter, and Osorio contributing 10 points and 12 rebounds for her ninth career double-double and fourth this year. Yoegel added four assists while Zamolyi and Osori each had two steals
  • Markowski finished the game six points and four assists while Robinson had four points and Amy added three points, three rebounds and two assists
  • Flannery posted two points and a pair of assists while sophomore forward Brielle Guarente had two points
  • The Greyhounds were 19-for-54 from the field, just 2-of-11 on three-pointers and 15-for-16 at the foul line
  • The Hounds had a 40-33 edge on the boards and forced the Rangers into 22 turnovers while making 19 miscues
