Hounds Unable to Hold Onto First Half Lead at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team had a five-point lead after the first quarter and a four-point edge at halftime; however, the Greyhounds ended up falling to host The Catholic University of America, 64-59, in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon. 

How It Happened

  • The Cardinals scored first before junior forward Sam Osorio put the Hounds on the scoreboard. Catholic led 7-4 when the Blue and Grey scored six straight points to take a 10-7 lead on a three-pointer from senior forward Emily Markowski at the 6:40 mark. Moravian had a 13-9 edge after a three-pointer from graduate student forward Tessa Zamolyi. The Cardinals answered to tie the game at 13-13, but it would be the Greyhounds leading 18-13 after 10 minutes after a trio of free throws by senior guard Morgan Amy in the final seconds of the quarter
  • The Hounds held the lead through the entire second period with Catholic getting within a point on two occasions. Moravian's advantage reached six points at 29-23 after two free throws from sophomore forward Brielle Guarente; however, those were the Blue & Grey's final points of the half as the Greyhounds headed to the locker room with a 29-25 edge
  • Moravian was up 31-27 when Osorio hit a lay-up early in the second half, but Catholic ran off seven straight points to take a 34-31 lead. The Greyhounds answered back and retook a 40-38 edge on a jumper from junior guard Reganne Flannery at the 3:29 mark. The Hounds were up 45-42 after a free throw by Zamolyi late in the third; however, the Cardinals beat the buzzer to make it a 45-44 Moravian edge after 30 minutes of play
  • Catholic netted the first 11 points of the fourth quarter to take control at 55-45 with 5:39 to go. Flannery snapped the run with a pair of free throws, and the Greyhounds slowly cut the deficit down to two points at 61-59 when Zamolyi sank a lay-up with 35 seconds remaining. The Cardinals would seal the contest with three free throws in the final 18 seconds. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had a pair of players in double figures with Zamolyi earning her 13th double-double of the season as she registered 17 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four assists. Graduate student forward Kayla Yoegel also had 17 points to go with four boards and three steals
  • Osorio finished with eight points and three rebounds while Amy had six points and four assists. Guarente grabbed five boards, netted four points and made three steals while Flannery contributed four points, three assists and a pair of steals and Markowski posted three points and three rebounds
  • The Greyhounds were 21-for-54 from the floor, 2-for-11 on three-pointers and 15-for-22 at the foul line
