Greyhounds Knock Off Nationally Ranked Elizabethtown in Key Landmark Conference Battle

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team knocked off nationally ranked Elizabethtown College, 75-70, in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon in Johnston Hall as the Blue Jays entered the contest ranked No. 15 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division III Top 25 and No. 24 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 polls.

How It Happened

  • Elizabethtown scored the opening basket of the game before graduate student forward Tessa Zamolyi put the Greyhounds on the scoreboard with a free throw. The Blue Jays hit two more baskets for a 6-1 lead before a 7-0 run from the Hounds capped by a three-pointer from Zamolyi has the Blue and Grey holding an 8-6 edge. Elizabethtown eventually retook the lead, but two free throws from senior guard Morgan Amy had Moravian up 14-13 in the final seconds of the quarter. However, it was the Blue Jays that would beat the buzzer and hold a 15-14 advantage after 10 minutes of action
  • Junior forward Sam Osorio hit a lay-up to start the second quarter and give the Hounds the lead once again. Holding an 18-17 edge, the Blue and Grey had a 9-2 run capped by a three-pointer from Amy to stretch the advantage to 27-19. The Blue Jays countered and closed with a point twice, the second time at 29-28 with 2:51 left in the opening half. Moravian finished the quarter with another 9-2 run as a lay-up from Zamolyi send the Greyhounds to the locker room with a 38-30 lead
  • Elizabethtown quickly erased the advantage at the start of the third quarter with a 13-4 run to take a 43-42 edge. Senior guard Ashley Robinson connected on a three-pointer as the Hounds moved back in front as the remainder of the quarter saw five lead changes and four ties. However, it would be the Greyhounds that led after 30 minutes of action with a 58-57 edge after a three-pointer from senior forward Kayla Yoegel
  • The Blue Jays scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to move back in front, 61-58. Moravian countered with a 12-2 run as a free throw from Zamolyi made the advantage 70-63 with 6:52 to play. Elizabethtown answered with its own 7-0 run to knot the score for the eighth time in the contest at 70-70 with 1:51 remaining. The Greyhounds' defense stepped up and didn't allow the Blue Jays to score again while Amy drained four free throws and Osorio added one free throw to seal the victory for the Blue and Grey 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had three players in double digits led by Zamolyi, who had her 15th double-double of the season that included a career-best 27 points in a Greyhound uniform and 11 rebounds. Amy tossed in 14 points to go with seven assists and a pair of boards while Osorio has 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals
  • Yoegel contributed nine points and two assists while Robinson scored eight points and grabbed three boards. Sophomore forward Brielle Guarente added four points and three assists while senior forward Emily Markowski had four rebounds, two points, two assists and two steals
  • Junior guard Reganne Flannery blocked three shots for the Greyhounds while sophomore guard Mikayla Anderson had a pair of blocked shots
  • The Hounds were 26-for-56 from the field, 5-for-10 on three-pointers and 18-for-22 at the charity stripe, and Moravian had a 35-33 edge on the boards
  • The triumph was the first for the Greyhounds over a nationally ranked opponent since February 1, 2017 when the squad defeated then No.17 The University of Scranton, 87-83, on the road 
  • Head Coach Mary Beth Spirk was unable to be on the sideline for the game, the first contest she has missed in 36 seasons. Assistant Coach and Moravian Hall of Fame member Amy Endler '93 guided the squad for the afternoon
