Seven Softball Players Named 2011 NFCA Division III All-America Scholar Athletes

BETHLEHEM, PA – The Moravian College softball team had seven players named to the 2011 National Fastball Coaches Association Division III All-America Scholar Athlete. The award is given to any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2010-11 academic year.

The seven players honored include seniors pitcher Elizabeth Python (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman), outfielder Amanda Paulus (Easton, PA/Easton), and freshmen catcher Catherine Ernst (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona), infielder Eavan Matz (Port Jervis, NY/Delaware Valley), outfielder/pitcher Alycia Sabol (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh), infielder/pitcher Elizabeth Tillou (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown), infielder Lean Ventriglia (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North).

Last year, the Greyhounds finished the season with a 37-9 record, falling just short in the College World Series. Python was a big part of the Greyhounds success pitching to a 14-0 record with a 0.65 ERA. In 12 games started, she completed ten and threw six shutouts. She also had 85 strikeouts in 86.1 innings and held opposing batters to .160 batting average.

Paulus started 37 games and posted a .333 batting average. She led the team in home runs with seven and RBIs with 31. She also scored 30 runs and had eight doubles and one triple. She finished with a .637 slugging percentage and a .379 on-base percentage.

Ernst started 35 games for the Greyhounds and was second on the team in batting average with a .427. She scored 29 runs and drove in 19 more last year, and she had one home run and seven doubles. Her .549 slugging percentage and .552 on-base percentage also ranked second on the team.

Matz started eight games and played in 24 games. She had the fourth highest batting average at .364. She scored six runs, had five RBIs and one triple.

Sabol played in 15 games, starting two last season. She went 5-for-13 with four RBIs, three runs scored and one double. She also made one appearance in the circle, pitching one inning with three strikeouts in four batters

Tillou played in 13 games, while starting three. She went 4-for-15with five runs scored and two RBIs. She also made three appearances out of the bullpen last year with a 1.31 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched while striking out four.

Ventriglia started ten games and played in 24 for Moravian and went 3-for-14 with four RBIs and four runs scored.

The Greyhounds will start their quest back to the 2012 College World Series on Sunday, March 4 when they play their first of ten games in Clermont, Florida.
