Misericordia Rallies Past #18 Moravian, 4-3, in Final At-Bat

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Misericordia University softball team was one-out away from a loss before rallying for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat #18 Moravian College, 4-3, at the National Training Center Tuesday.

The Cougars, 2-4 on the year, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from junior designated player Kat LaBrie after Moravian, now 2-3 on the season, had led two runners on base in the top of the first.

The Greyhounds scored three times in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead.  Sophomore outfielder Taylor Mihalik led off the inning with a solo home run to left field.  Sophomore infielder Eavan Matz reached on an error and freshman outfielder Dior George had an infield single with one out.  After the second out of the inning, sophomore outfielder Miranda Sergas connected on a two-RBI double to give Moravian the lead.

For Misericordia in the bottom of the seventh inning, sophomore second baseman Shawnna Beil drew a walk with one out, and junior pitcher Caitlin Cromley walked with two outs.  Senior outfielder Jill Castaldi, batting in the ninth spot in the line-up, tied the game with a two-RBI double.  Freshman shortstop Mallory Getts followed with an RBI double of her own to win the game for the Cougars.

Moravian had an 8-6 edge in hits in the game with Sergas going three-for-three with two RBIs.  Castaldi was two-for-three for Misericordia with two RBIs.

Greyhounds junior pitcher Alyssa Fegely took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and three walks while striking out six batters.  Cromley earned her first win of the year for the Cougars with three runs, just one earned, on eight hits to go with six strikeouts.

Moravian will play two more games at the National Training Center on Wednesday, March 7, taking on Ohio Northern University at 5:00 p.m. and Emerson (Mass.) College at 7:00 p.m.
