Softball Clinches 18th Straight Postseason Berth with Sweep of Juniata

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Moravian College softball team swept Landmark Conference foe Juniata College. The Greyhounds won the first game 8-0 in five innings and 8-0 in six innings in the second game.

In game one, senior pitcher Jenna Carmon would get the start for the Greyhounds. She would record a 1-2-3 inning that included her 300th career strikeout.

The Eagles would put some pressure on in the second after getting two ladies on base, but Carmon would leave the inning unscathed.

Freshman outfielder Jenn Dalickas would break the tie in the bottom of the second with a home run to center field for a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore outfielder Taylor Mihalik started the third with a lead-off single. She would then be sacrificed over, and freshman outfielder Dior George followed with a RBI double down the left field line for a 2-0 lead.

Mihalik would start off the fifth with a singles up the middle. She then reached third after a sacrifice and a wild pitch. George then drove her home with a single to center field. Carmon then hit a RBI single to score George, and sophomore catcher Cassie Ernst followed with a two-run home run to center field. Junior third baseman Shannen Mohr then walked and Dalickas followed with her second home run of the game to make the score 8-0 as the Greyhounds would win in five innings.

Carmon earned her 14th win of the season after pitching a five innings, three hit and six strikeout shutout. Dalickas went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs while Mihalik went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Ernst went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a home run while George went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Sophomore pitcher Rachel Smith took the loss for Juniata after giving up eight runs in 4.2 innings. Freshman Kate Schroeder went 2-for-2 while sophomore catcher Meghan Decker went 1-for-1.

In game two, the Eagles would get the first two hits of the game in the top of the second to put two ladies on with zero outs, but Carmon would work her way out of the inning to keep the contest knotted at zero.

Ernst would lead-off the bottom of the second with a double to left field. Ernst then scored on a fielder's choice to put Moravian up 1-0.

Carmon would have her strikeout pitch working in the third inning after striking out the side.

Dalickas would start the fifth with a lead-off single. Freshman Bryanna Gifford would pinch run for her, and Mihalik would drive her home with a double to right field for a 2-0 lead.

Carmon would strikeout the side again in the sixth innings to keep the score at 2-0, Greyhounds.

Sophomore outfielder Miranda Sergas would start the sixth with a lead-off single. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ernst then reached on a throwing error. Mohr followed by reaching on an error by the shortstop to score Sergas. Dalickas then hit a three-run home run to right field. Moravian would add two more runs in the inning to win 8-0.

Carmon pitched her second shutout of the day after going six innings while striking out eight and only allowing four hits. Dalickas went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs while Mihalik went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Ernst went 1-for-3 with two runs scored while Sergas went 1-for-3 with a run.

Sophomore pitcher Kelsea Decker took the loss after giving up eight runs, three earned in 5.1 innings. Meghan Decker went 1-for-2 while freshman first baseman Ali Vogatsky went 1-for-2.

The Greyhounds hit their 26th home run of the season today, which ties the old record of 26 set back in 2006

Moravian returns to action on Sunday, April 22nd as they host Lebanon Valley College for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
