Big 6th Inning Lifts Ohio Northern Past #19 Moravian, 11-4

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Ohio Northern University softball team scored nine runs in the top of the sixth inning to turn a 4-2 deficit into an 11-4 victory over #19 Moravian College at the National Training Center Wednesday evening.

The Polar Bears, now 4-2 on the season, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a two-out solo home run by senior second baseman Jackie Mangola.

The Greyhounds, who dropped to 2-4 on the year, would take a 3-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Freshman pitcher/infielder Lizzie Mack led off with a single and sophomore outfielder Miranda Sergas followed with an infield single.  After a sacrifice bunt and a walk, sophomore outfielder Taylor Mihalik connected on a two-RBI single.  Senior first baseman/pitcher Jenna Carmon scored the final run of the inning on a passed ball.

Ohio Northern answered with a run in the top of the fifth to cut Moravian's lead to 3-2 as freshman outfielder Kelly Sheridan scored on a passed ball.

Moravian added a run to its lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning.  Freshman outfielder Dior George led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Cassie Ernst.

The Polar Bears pushed nine runs across the plate in the top of the sixth inning, just two of them were earned runs as the Greyhounds committed two errors in the inning.  Senior first baseman Katie Cretin and sophomore outfielder Christin Miller each had two-RBI singles in the inning.

Ohio Northern finished with a 15-8 advantage in hits as Mangola went three-for-five with two RBIs.  Miller was two-for-five with three RBIs while Sheridan and senior third baseman Cassie Gaye were also two-for-five.  Cretin and freshman designated player Jamie Westenkirchner were both two-for-three for the Polar Bears. Mihalik led Moravian at the plate with a one-for-three performance and two RBIs.

Mack started in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits and two walks in four-plus innings of action.  Carmon suffered the loss, falling to 1-3 on the year, after giving up nine runs, just two earned, on eight hits and two walks in three innings.

Ohio Northern junior Abbey Bensing earned the win, giving up four runs, two earned, on eight hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts.

Moravian would get right back on the field for its second game of the day versus Emerson (Mass.) College.
