BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College softball team played its 2012 home opening doubleheader Tuesday and earned a sweep of Drew University, 11-2 and 9-0, in a pair of five-inning Landmark Conference games at Blue & Grey Field with junior pitcher Alyssa Fegely tossing her first career no-hitter in the second contest.
The Rangers, 5-7 overall and 1-3 in Landmark Conference action, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the opening game. Freshman outfielder Antoinette Tovar drew a walk with one out and scored on an RBI double from freshman first baseman Michelle Cozza.
The Greyhounds, who are now 10-6 on the season and 3-1 in conference play, answered with four runs in the bottom half of the opening frame to take a 4-1 lead. Sophomore outfielder Miranda Sergas and senior pitcher Jenna Carmon had back-to-back singles with one out before sophomore catcher Cassie Ernst connected on a two-RBI double to the fence in left centerfield that scored Sergas and Carmon. After sophomore designated player Taylor Mihalik walked, freshman outfielder Jenn Dalickas hit a two-RBI double down the right field line that brought in Ernst and Mihalik.
Moravian would extend its lead to 9-1 with five runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman outfielder Dior George walked to begin the inning and stole base before Sergas singled. Carmon had an RBI single to plate George before Ernst was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mihalik would connect on a two-RBI double off the top of the left field fence scoring Sergas and Carmon before Dalickas had an RBI sacrifice fly that sent Ernst across the plate. Junior first baseman Shannen Mohr finished off the scoring in the inning with an RBI double to score Mihalik.
The Greyhounds scored once in the bottom of the third for a 10-1 lead when Carmon doubled to right field with one-out and scored on an RBI double by Ernst. Moravian scored its final run in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore pinch hitter Elizabeth Tillou doubled down the right field line and scored on an RBI double from junior outfielder Brook Kowal.
Drew would score a run in the top of the fifth inning when freshman second baseman Casey Reggiani reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded by Tovar.
Moravian had a 14-4 edge in hits in the first game with Carmon going three-for-three and Ernst going two-for-two with three RBIs. Sergas was two-for-three while Dalickas went one-for-two with three RBIs.
In the circle, Carmon improved to 5-3 on the season, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts. The victory was the 58th of Carmon's career, moving her into sole possession of third in school history. Freshman Laura D'Ornellas took the loss for the Rangers after giving up nine runs on seven hits and a three walks and one strikeout in one-plus inning of action.
The Greyhounds would open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning in the second game with three runs. George led off with a single, stole second base and scored on an RBI double by Sergas. After a long fly out, Ernst connected on a two-run homer to left field, her first home run of the season.
Moravian doubled the lead to 6-0 with three more runs in the bottom of the second stanza. Mohr walked to start the inning and Fegely followed with a single. After an out, George connected on a two-RBI double to the fence in center field to score Mohr and Fegely. Sergas would follow with an RBI double to chase in George.
The Greyhounds started the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back solo home runs by Mihalik and Dalickas, the second homers of the season for each player, to push the lead to 8-0.
Moravian then added a run in the bottom of the fourth for a 9-0 advantage. Freshman pinch hitter Lizzie Mack reached on a fielder's choice and came all the way around to score on an RBI double by junior catcher Tori Thomas.
The Greyhounds had ten hits in the second game with Sergas going two-for-two and George going two-for-three.
Fegely allowed a walk in her no-hitter, which is the 29th no-hitter in school history, and she struck out seven batters to improve to 2-1 on the season. Freshman Casey Reggiani took the loss in the circle for Drew, allowing nine runs on ten hits and two walks.
Moravian is scheduled to return to action in a non-conference doubleheader at Albright College on Thursday, March 29 starting at 3:00 p.m.
