Softball Splits with Ursinus & Hits School-Record 6 Homers in 2nd Game

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Ursinus College Saturday at Blue & Grey Field with the Bears winning the opener 1-0 and the Greyhounds taking the second game 11-0 in six innings after hitting a school record six home runs by six different players.

Moravian threatened to score in the bottom of the first inning of the opener when freshman outfielder Dior George doubled to start the inning but she was stranded at third base.

The Bears would get back-to-back hits to begin the second inning but the Greyhounds' defense would strand runners at second and third in the inning.

Ursinus would break through in the top of the third inning with what ended up as the only run of the game when senior designated hitter Kate Kehoe drew a bases loaded walk with two outs for a 1-0 Ursinus lead.

The Bears had a 7-5 edge in hits in the opening game as junior catcher Emelie McFarland went two-for-three.  Sophomore catcher Cassie Ernst led Moravian at the plate with a two-for-three performance.

Junior pitcher Jennilyn Weber earned the shutout win for Ursinus, allowing five hits and striking out five batters.  Senior Jenna Carmon took the loss for the Greyhounds, allowing a run on seven hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts.

Moravian would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning.  George drew a walk to start, and she scored on a two-run, two-out home run to left center field by Ernst, her second homer of the season.  Junior pitcher Alyssa Fegely followed with a solo homer to right center field, also her second home run of the season.

The Greyhounds would extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore third baseman Rachel DeLucia hit her first collegiate homer to start the inning.

Moravian scored three more times in the bottom half of the fourth inning for a 7-0 lead.  Freshman first baseman Jenn Dalickas led off with a solo home run to right field that cleared the eight-lane track beyond the fence for her third homer of the year.  Junior catcher Tori Thomas singled with one out before George connected on a two-run homer to left field, George's first home run of her college career.

The Greyhounds finished off the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to reach the NCAA eight-run rule and end the game.  Sophomore second baseman Eavan Matz walked to start the inning before George just missed her second homer of the game with a double down the left field line that hit halfway up the fence.  Sophomore pinch hitter Melissa Cottone was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs before junior third baseman Amanda Dizinno connected on her first homer of the season, a grand slam on the first pitch she saw.

Moravian had a 9-2 edge in hits in the second game with seven of the nine hits going for extra bases.  George was three-for-three in the game for the Greyhounds.

Fegely improved to 3-1 in the circle for Moravian with her second shutout of the season that included two hits and two walks allowed to go with three strikeouts.  The Bears used three pitchers in the game with junior Kelly Schymanski taking the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.  Weber tossed 2 1/3 innings and allowed two runs while sophomore Caitlin Whelan tossed the final two-plus innings and gave up six runs.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 3 in a non-conference doubleheader at Hunter College on Randall's Island in New York City beginning at 3:30 p.m.
