Softball Sweeps Albright, 10-3 & 12-8

READING, Pa. --- The Moravian College softball team pushed its winning streak to six straight games with its third straight doubleheader sweep, defeating Albright College, 10-3 and 12-8, in non-conference action Thursday including a rally from a four-run deficit in the second game.

Moravian, now 12-6 this spring, jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the opening game.  Freshman outfielder Jenn Dalickas led off the inning with a double, and after an infield single by junior third baseman Shannen Mohr and a sacrifice bunt, Dalickas would score on an RBI ground out by sophomore second baseman Eavan Matz.  After freshman outfielder Dior George drew a walk, sophomore outfielder Miranda Sergas had an RBI infield single to score MohrSergas would steal second base, and then score along with George on a two-RBI single by senior pitcher Jenna Carmon.

Albright, now 4-8 this season, scored a run in the bottom half of the second inning when sophomore catcher Hilary Rodriguez connected on a solo home run with two outs.

The Greyhounds added four runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to 8-1.  Sophomore designated player Taylor Mihalik led off with a single and scored on an RBI single by MohrDalickas singled after Mihalik and would score on an error before Sergas had a two-RBI single that scored Matz and freshman first baseman Lizzie Mack

The Lions would score again in the bottom of the third when freshman first baseman Natalie Carlucci had an RBI single to cut Moravian's lead to 8-2.

Moravian scored a single run in the top of the sixth inning when Mohr hit an RBI single to score freshman pinch runner Bryanna Gifford after Dalickas had reached on an error with two outs.

Albright's final run of the opening game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman shortstop Alyssa Romero had an RBI single.

The Greyhounds finished off the scoring in the first contest in the top of the seventh for the 10-3 victory.  George drew a walk with one out, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Carmon.

Moravian had a 13-8 advantage in hits in the contest with Mohr going three-for-four and a pair of RBIs.  Carmon was three-for-five with three RBIs while Sergas was two-for-four with three RBIs.  Dalickas went two-for-four.  Rodriquez and Romero each went two-for-three to lead Albright.

Carmon improved to 6-3 in the circle for the Greyhounds after allowing three runs on eight hits to go with three strikeouts in six innings of action.  The victory was the 59th of her career, moving her into a tie for second with Moravian College Hall of Fame pitcher Amy Croll Souders '97.  Sophomore Elizabeth Tillou tossed the final inning for Moravian.  Junior Allie Frank took the loss for Albright after giving up eight runs, seven earned on eight hits and three walks to go with two strikeouts in two plus innings.

The Greyhounds would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game.  Sergas singled with one out and scored on an RBI single from sophomore designated player Cassie ErnstDalickas added an RBI double that scored Carmon, who had reached on an error.

Moravian would push its lead to 3-0 with a run in the visiting half of the second inning.  Junior pitcher Alyssa Fegely led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from Matz.

Albright would score seven times in its half of the third inning to build a 7-3 lead.  Sophomore third baseman Jackie Bohanan had an RBI single that plated two runs with an error in the Moravian outfield before Carlucci had an RBI sacrifice fly.  Senior designated player Becky Crandall had an RBI single before sophomore outfielder Marguerite DeLucas, who had started the inning with a double, ripped an RBI single.  Junior second baseman Ally Martin finished off the scoring for the Lions in the third with a two-RBI single.

The Greyhounds answered right back with five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take an 8-7 lead.  Carmon had an RBI single to score Matz, who started the inning with a single.  Ernst followed with an RBI single that plated a pair of runs after an error in the Albright outfield.  Mihalik followed with a two-run homer, her team leading third home run of the season, to put the Greyhounds back in front.

Moravian added a run for a 9-7 advantage in the top of the sixth inning.  Carmon singled with one out and scored on an RBI single by Dalickas.

The Lions pulled within a run in the bottom half of the sixth inning on an error by Moravian.

The Greyhounds finished off the scoring in the top of the seventh with three more runs.  Junior outfielder Brook Kowal had an RBI single before Carmon connected on a two-RBI single.

Moravian had 17-14 edge in hits in the second game.  Carmon and Sergas both went three-for-five with three runs scored and Carmon added three RBIs while Dalickas was three-for-four with two RBIs.  Ernst was two-for-four for the Greyhounds with two RBIs while Matz went two-for-three at the plate.  Crandall was three-for-four for Albright while junior outfielder Miriah Wilson went three-for-five.  DeLucas and Bohanan both went two-for-four.

Fegely started in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits to go with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of action.  Tillou would come on in relief to earn the win to improve to 4-1 on the season.  Tillou gave up three unearned runs on seven hits and a walk to go along with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Romano started for Albright and tossed one-plus innings with three runs, one earned, on five hits.  Sophomore Melissa Almonti took the loss after allowing nine runs, seven earned, on 12 hits with a strikeout over six innings of action.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, March 31 in a non-conference doubleheader versus Ursinus College at Blue & Grey Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
