Cariello Narrowly Misses Heptathlon Record at Princeton Multis

PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior David Cariello of the Moravian College men's indoor track & field team finished fifth out of seven competitors in the heptathlon at the Princeton University Multis on Jan. 29-30 with a total score of 4,679, just 46 points shy of the school record he set in December at Lehigh University.

Cariello ran a personal record 3:10.14 in the 1000-meter run and a season-high 8.54 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to win the event at Princeton for 851 points. The 60-meter hurdles time is an ECAC qualifier.

The senior tied for fourth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.44 seconds, and came up with another fourth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.67 meters (21' 10.75") on his first leap.

Cariello had a pair of fifth-place finishes in the high jump (1.77 meters – 5' 9.75") and in the shot put (10.76 meters – 35' 3.75").

The Moravian College record holder in the heptathlon finished second in one of his strongest events, the pole vault. He recorded a mark of 4.15 meters (13' 7.5") at Princeton for 659 points in the multi event.

Cariello's 4,725 points in the heptathlon at Fast Times Before Finals at Lehigh University currently ranks sixth on the Track & Field Results Reporting System used to qualify for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships on March 14-15 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The NCAA will invite the top 15 per event to the National Championships.
