Cariello Hurdles Conference Competition for Athlete of the Week

TOWSON, Md. – Senior David Cariello of the Moravian College men's indoor track & field team has been selected the Landmark Conference Track Athlete of the Week after his performance last weekend.

Cariello won the 55-meter hurdles at the Kutztown University Last Chance Invitational on Saturday, running 7.84 seconds in the finals. The senior also posted the fastest time in the preliminaries with a run of 7.91 seconds.

When converted to the 60-meter hurdles standard, the Track & Field Results & Reports System (TFRRS) has Cariello's time at a career-best 8.44 seconds, which ranks 18th in Division III. The converted time is also an ECAC-qualifying mark.

"He hasn't been running as well the previous few weeks, so it was good to see him have a big breakthrough in the hurdles this week," head coach Jesse Baumann said. "We still need to improve his marks a few points in the heptathlon to make it to NCAA's so it's encouraging to see him starting to peak at the right time."

Cariello set a new school record in the heptathlon this season with 4,725 points at Lehigh University. The total was converted due to Lehigh's track size to 4,749, which ranks 17th in the nation on the TFRRS list. The NCAA will invite the top 15 men in any event, including the heptathlon, to the National Indoor Championship on March 14-15 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The senior followed up his first-place finish in the hurdles at Kutztown by finishing sixth of 15 competitors in the pole vault, clearing the 4.10 meter (13' 5.25") mark.

Cariello and the Greyhounds return to action on Saturday, March 1 at the 2014 Landmark Conference Indoor Championships hosted by Susquehanna University.
