WINTER HAVEN, Fla. --- The Moravian University softball squad began the 2023 season with a split on the first day of the PFX Spring Games at the DiamondPLEX in Winter Haven, Florida as the Greyhounds defeated Chatham College, 4-1, to give first-year Head Coach Josh Baltz '08 his first career victory before falling to Adrian (Mich.) College, 6-2, in the second game Sunday.

How It Happened – Chatham Game

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys drew a one-out walk, and sophomore pitcher Madi Cunningham connected for a single through the right side. After a wild pitch, junior designated player Emily Silberman ripped a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield as Gawrys and Cunningham both scored
  • The Cougars cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the first with an unearned run
  • Moravian made it 3-1 with a run in the top of the third inning when Cunningham led off with a single and eventually scored on a Chatham error
  • The Hounds finished off the scoring with a run on the top of the fifth. Silberman drew a leadoff walk with sophomore Sage Snyder coming into run. Snyder eventually raced across the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Jessica Forder
  • Cunningham went the distance in the circle and recorded the first collegiate no-hitter as she allowed an unearned run on three walks while striking out seven batters.

How It Happened – Adrian Game

  • Moravian scored first against the Bulldogs with a run in the bottom of the second. Freshman catcher Marcie Silberman singled with one out and crossed the plate on an RBI single by Forder
  • Adrian knotted the score with a run in the top of the third, and then the Bulldogs plated four runs in the top of the fifth frame to take a 5-1 lead
  • The Greyhounds pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to cut the score to 5-2. Cunningham singled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI out from Forder
  • The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the seventh to finish off the scoring
  • Senior Madison Hummel made the start in the circle for the Hounds, and she had a pair of walks to go with six strikeouts in five innings of action. The six strikeouts give Hummel 101 strikeouts in her career. Freshman Sarah DeStefano tossed the final two innings of the contest with a pair of strikeouts
