Moravian Sweeps Scranton to Strengthen Hold on Top Spot in Landmark Conference Standings

SCRANTON, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball squad swept a Landmark Conference doubleheader at The University of Scranton Saturday, winning 9-0 in five innings and 12-7, to strengthen the Hounds hold on the top spot in the conference standings with two series remaining. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds scored three times in the top of the first inning, and the Blue & Grey would get all the offense they needed when sophomore third baseman Holly Walter led off the contest with a solo home run, her third homer of the season. Sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys hit a two-out double and scored on an error before sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder connected on a solo home run, her first career homer
  • Moravian plated a pair of runs in the top of the third frame to increase the edge to 5-0. Gawrys started the inning with a single, and she scored on an RBI single off Snyder's bat. Freshman second baseman Hailey Tanner raced across the plate on an RBI groundout from junior shortstop Ajala Elmore
  • The Hounds added four runs in the top of the fourth to finish the scoring in the opener. Sophomore pitcher Madi Cunningham drew a leadoff walk, and she trotted home when junior designated player Emily Silberman earned an RBI walk with the bases loaded. Snyder connected on an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Walter while Gawrys raced home when freshman outfielder Sarah DeStefano reached on an error. Tanner scored the final run of the game on another error by the Royals
  • Cunningham tossed the complete game shutout in the circle to improve to 10-5 on the year, and she recorded a pair of strikeouts 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to another early lead in the second game with a six-run second inning. Silberman led off with a single before Tanner came into pinch run. Sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder hit an RBI single that scored Tanner while junior left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer connected on an RBI single to score Forder. Gawrys ripped a two-RBI single that scored Zettlemoyer and Walter while freshman catcher Marcie Silberman hit a two-run homer, her fourth home run of the season, to score Gawrys to finish off the inning
  • Scranton got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the second
  • Moravian earned the run back in the top of the third frame as Elmore led off with a double and raced across the plate on an RBI single from Forder
  • The Royals added a run in the bottom of the third to make it 7-2
  • The Hounds scored three times in the top of the fourth to push the edge to 10-2. Marcie Silberman led off with a double and scored on an RBI single off Elmore's bat. Forder drove in the other two runs with Tanner and Silberman coming home
  • Scranton plated five runs on the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 10-7
  • The Blue & Grey finished off the game with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Snyder had an RBI single to score Gawrys while Marcie Silberman came home on an RBI groundout by Tanner
  • DeStefano started in the circle and had one strikeout in 3.1 innings of action while senior Madison Hummel pitched 1.2 innings to earn her first win of the season. Cunningham would toss the final two frames and strikeout one batter

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 23 hits in the doubleheader with Snyder going 4-for-6 with four RBIs, a run and her first collegiate home run
  • Walter was 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and a homer while Marcie Silberman was 3-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs and a homer
  • Elmore and Forder were both 3-for-6 with Elmore adding two runs and two RBIs while Forder added four RBIs and a run
  • Gawrys also had three hits on the day to go with five runs, two RBIs and a double while Zettlemoyer and Emily Silberman each had a pair of hits and an RBI with Zettlemoyer also crossing the plate once
  • Tanners scored four runs and added an RBI while Cunningham scored once
