Moravian Records Two More Victories at Spring Games in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. --- The Moravian University softball team recorded two more victories at the PFX Spring Games at the DiamondPLEX in Winter Haven, Florida on Thursday with a 4-2 win over Bridgewater (Va.) College and a 10-2, five-inning triumph versus Eastern University.

How It Happened – Bridgewater Game

  • The Greyhounds scored first with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Junior catcher Mya Zettlemoyer led off with a single while sophomore third baseman Holly Walter drew a walk and freshman right fielder Sarah DeStefano reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys then ripped a three-RBI triple to right field as Zettlemoyer, Walter and DeStefano all scored. Gawrys came across the plate on an RBI groundout from sophomore pitcher Madi Cunningham to make it 4-0
  • The Eagles got a run back in the top of the fourth frame to cut the Hounds' edge to 4-1, and Bridgewater added run in the fifth inning as well to make it a 4-2 contest and finish off the scoring
  • Cunningham went the distance in the circle as she registered four strikeouts and no walks while improving to 3-1 on the year

How It Happened – Eastern Game

  • The Eagles opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 edge
  • Moravian answered with five runs in the top of the second frame to take the lead for good. Junior shortstop Ajala Elmore led off with a double and moved to third on a single from sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder. Freshman catcher Marcie Silberman followed with a three-run homer, the first home run of her career. Sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder reached on an infield single and raced home on an RBI single from DeStefano while Walter crossed the plate when DeStefano was thrown out on a stolen base attempt
  • Eastern scored again in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 5-2
  • The Hounds scored five more runs in the top of the fourth for the 10-2 advantage. Snyder got things started with a single, and she came home on an RBI sacrifice fly off Gawry's bat. Elmore had an RBI fielder's choice that scored Walter while Forder drew a bases loaded RBI walk to bring in DeStefano. Silberman drove in the final two runs of the game with an RBI single that scored Elmore and freshman second baseman Kendall Szor
  • DeStefano improved to 2-0 in the circle for the Greyhounds with three strikeouts in four innings of action. Senior Madison Hummel added one strikeout in an inning of work

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 18 hits in the two games led by Walter, who was 4-for-6 on the day and scored three runs. DeStefano was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI while Silberman was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, a run and her homer in the game with Eastern
  • Snyder posted two hits and scored twice for the Greyhounds while Gawrys had one hit, a run, a triple and three RBIs
  • Elmore finished with two runs, a hit and an RBI while Forder and Zettlemoyer each had one hit and one run and Cunningham had a hit and an RBI in the opener with Bridgewater
