Greyhounds Sweep FDU-Florham in Non-Conference Action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball squad swept visiting FDU-Florham, 9-1 in six innings and 3-2, in a non-conference doubleheader at Blue & Grey Field Tuesday afternoon.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore third baseman Holly Walter led off the frame with a triple to right center, and freshman right fielder Sarah DeStefano followed with an RBI single off the glove of the diving shortstop as Walter raced home
  • The Blue & Grey extended the edge to 2-0 with a run in the second inning. Junior catcher Mya Zettlemoyer connected on a two-out triple and came across the plate on an RBI single off Walter's bat
  • The Devils got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fourth to cut the Hounds' advantage to 2-1
  • Moravian stretched the lead to 5-1 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior shortstop Ajala Elmore and Zettlemoyer hit singles, and Walter drew a walk to load the bases. With two outs, sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys connected on a two-RBI single to bring in Elmore and Zettlemoyer. Junior designated player Emily Silberman then hit an RBI single to left field as Walter raced home
  • The Hounds pushed four runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to institute the NCAA eight-run rule and end the contest. Walter led off with a single and DeStefano reached on fielder's choice before Gawrys hit an infield single to load the bases. Silberman hit an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Walter before sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder had an RBI infield single to chase DeStefano home. Sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder drew a walk to load the bases again. Sophomore pinch hitter Ren Herschman connected on an RBI fielder's choice to score Gawrys while Elmore ripped an RBI single up the middle to bring in Snyder with the final run
  • Sophomore Madi Cunningham started in the circle, and she struck out seven while improving to 6-4 on the year 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Devils took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a home run to right field
  • The Hounds answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to knot the contest a 2-2. Freshman right fielder Madison Berning drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a one-out single off Walter's bat. DeStefano followed with an RBI single to push Berning home. Walter would come in and tie the game on a ground ball hit by freshman catcher Marcie Silberman with the throw on the play going out of play to allow Walter to score
  • Moravian pushed the go ahead run across the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Berning drew another walk, this time with two outs, and she raced all the way around the bases on an RBI double from Forder
  • FDU-Florham had the tying run at third base and the go ahead run at second base when the Greyhounds made the final out defensively in the top of the seventh
  • DeStefano improved to 8-1 in the circle while posting four strikeouts 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 22 hits in the doubleheader with Walter going 4-for-7 with four runs, a double and a triple
  • DeStefano, Gawrys and Elmore each had three hits with DeStefano and Gawrys both adding two RBIs and a run while Elmore had one run and an RBI
  • Emily Silberman contributed two hits and a pair of RBIs while Zettlemoyer had two hits, two runs and a triple. Snyder also recorded two hits, a run and an RBI while Forder had a hit, a double and an RBI and freshman second baseman Hailey Tanner had a hit
