Hounds Win Twice at Spring Games with Victories over St. Mary’s (Minn.) & Neumann

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. --- The Moravian University softball squad won a pair of games in the PFX Spring Games at the DiamondPLEX in Winter Haven, Florida, on Tuesday with victories over St. Mary's (Minn.) University, 4-1, and Neumann University, 7-3.

How It Happened – St. Mary's Game

  • The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning
  • The Hounds got on the scoreboard and tied the contest at 1-1 with a run in the bottom half of the second. Sophomore pitcher Madi Cunningham was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and she raced home on an RBI single by junior catcher Mya Zettlemoyer
  • Moravian took a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the third frame. Sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys reached on an error to begin the inning, and she scored on another St. Mary's error on a ball hit by sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder with the bases loaded. Sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that brought in Cunningham, who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning
  • The Blue and Grey added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore third baseman Holly Walter singled to lead off the frame and scored on an RBI bunt single from freshman right fielder Sarah DeStefano
  • Cunningham went the distance in the circle, striking out one batter to improve to 2-1 on the season

How It Happened – Neumann Game

  • The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first inning
  • Moravian knotted the score in the top of the second with two runs. Forder reached on an error with one out, and she raced home from second base on an RBI single up the middle by freshman right fielder Madison Berning. Later in the frame, Berning crossed the plate on an error on a ground ball hit by DeStefano
  • The Greyhounds took a 4-2 edge with two more runs in the top of the third. Junior designated player Emily Silberman led off the frame with a solo home run, her third homer in four games and 15th of her career. Forder connected on a two-out single, and she scored on another Neumann error on a ball hit by Snyder
  • The Blue & Grey tacked on a run in the top of the fifth inning for a 5-2 advantage. Freshman catcher Marcie Silberman led off with a single and freshman Hailey Tanner came in to pinch run. Tanner came in to score on an RBI double to left center by Forder
  • Moravian scored twice more in the top of the sixth to push the lead to 7-2. Walter singled up the middle to lead off, and she came home on an RBI groundout by Emily Silberman. Marcie Silberman followed with an RBI single that had freshman pinch hitter Angelina Marino score after she singled in her plate appearance
  • The Knights pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh before DeStefano struck out the final two batters of the game
  • DeStefano earned her first collegiate victory in the circle as she struck out four batters in the complete game win 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 19 hits in the two games led Walter, who was 4-for-6 on the day while scoring two runs. Snyder went 3-for-6 in the contests with an RBI while Marcie Silberman, Forder and junior shortstop Ajala Elmore all collected two hits with Forder adding two runs, an RBI and a double and Silberman driving in a run
  • Emily Silberman hit her team-leading third home run of the spring to go with two RBIs while Berning had a hit, a run and an RBI
  • DeStefano and Zettlemoyer both contributed a hit and an RBI while Gawrys and Marino each had a hit and scored once
