BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team rallied with three runs in the sixth inning to take a lead on visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology at a rainy Blue & Grey Field Monday afternoon; however, the Engineers answered with three runs in the seventh to defeat the Greyhounds, 7-5.
How It Happened
- The Hounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore third baseman Holly Walter drew a leadoff walk, and freshman right fielder/pitcher Sarah DeStefano was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys, junior designated player Emily Silberman roped a two-RBI single off the fence in left field as Walter and DeStefano crossed the plate
- The Engineers scored three times in the top of the third inning to take a 3-2 edge, and MIT extended its advantage to 4-2 with a run in the top of the fourth frame
- Moravian retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, the Blue and Grey connected on three straight doubles to left field with sophomore outfielder Jessica Forder getting the first two-bagger before sophomore outfielder Sage Snyder and junior catcher/outfielder Mya Zettlemoyer both ripping RBI doubles. Walter singled to move Zettlemoyer to third base, then Walter was thrown out stealing with Zettlemoyer racing home with the final run of the frame
- MIT countered with three runs in the top of the seventh to retake the advantage
- The contest was played throughout patches of heavy rain, light rain and sunshine. The squads were originally slated to play a doubleheader last Saturday with the Engineers in the Lehigh Valley for their Spring Break trip but that twinbill was postponed by rain and switched to the single game on Monday, the only day MIT had free on its trip
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had seven hits in the contest with DeStefano going 2-for-3
- Silberman was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Snyder and Zettlemoyer each had RBI doubles and scored a run. Forder and Walter both had one hit and scored once with Forder adding an RBI
- Sophomore Madi Cunningham made the start in the circle for the Greyhounds, and she had one strikeout in four innings of action
- DeStefano tossed the final three innings and recorded three strikeouts while suffering her first loss of the season in the circle after starting 5-0
