Greyhounds Take Two from Catholic in Landmark Conference Action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team swept a Landmark Conference doubleheader from visiting Catholic University of America at Blue & Grey Field Sunday afternoon as the Greyhounds took the opener 7-6 in a walk-off win before a 9-0, five-inning victory in the nightcap.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Hounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore third baseman Holly Walter led off with a double, and she raced home with a stolen base as sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys took second with a delayed steal
  • Moravian stretched the advantage to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the third frame. Freshman right fielder Sarah DeStefano reached on an error with one out, and she moved to third on a single by Gawrys. Junior designated player Emily Silberman followed with an RBI single that scored DeStefano while Gawrys raced home on a wild pitch
  • The Cardinals got on the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to knot the score at 3-3
  • The Blue & Grey retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth frame when sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder singled with one out and raced home on an RBI single off Walter's bat
  • Catholic took its first lead of the contest with two runs in the top of the sixth
  • The Greyhounds countered again with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 5-5. Walter led off the inning with a single, and she raced home when Silberman connected on an RBI single off the top of the fence in straightaway center, missing a home run by inches
  • The Cardinals moved back in front, 6-5, with a run in the top of the seventh inning
  • Moravian scored twice for its second straight walk-off win at Blue & Grey Field. Freshman Marcie Silberman pinch hit and launched her third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field that landed 40 feet beyond the fence. After two outs, Walter finished off the game with a walk-off homer down the left field line, her second home run of the season
  • Sophomore Madi Cunningham earned the win in the circle with one strikeout as she improved to 8-4 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a six-run second inning. Sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder led off with a single before Emily Silberman singled and junior shortstop Ajala Elmore walked to load the bases. Freshman right fielder Madison Berning had an RBI fielder's choice that scored Snyder while freshman second baseman Kendall Szor, who had come in to run for Silberman, raced home on an RBI sacrifice fly by Forder. Walter ripped another RBI single to bring Elmore across the plate while DeStefano added an RBI single to score Berning. Gawrys followed with an RBI groundout as Walter crossed the plate while Marcie Silberman drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI double to bring in DeStefano
  • Moravian scored three more times in the bottom of the fourth inning for the NCAA run-rule to end the game after five innings. DeStefano and Gawrys had singled while Snyder walked to load the bases. Emily Silberman connected on a two-RBI single as DeStefano and Gawrys raced around the bases while Snyder scored the final run of the afternoon on an RBI sacrifice fly from Elmore
  • DeStefano improved to 10-1 in the circle with her second shutout of the season, and she struck out six and didn't walk anyone while scattering six hits

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 22 hits in the doubleheader with Walter going 5-for-8 with three RBIs, four runs and the winning homer in the first game
  • DeStefano went 4-for-6 at the place with three runs and an RBI while Emily Silberman was 4-for-7 with four RBIs on the day
  • Gawrys had a 3-for-5 afternoon with a pair of runs and an RBI while Marcie Silberman went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run and a homer
  • Forder also had two hits, a run and an RBI while Elmore contributed a hit, a run and an RBI and Snyder added a pair of runs and a hit
  • Berning recorded a run and an RBI while Szor scored once
