Moravian Begins 2023 Home Schedule With Sweep of Ursinus

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team began its 2023 home schedule with a sweep of Ursinus College at Blue & Grey Field Thursday afternoon as the Greyhounds posted 6-2 and 16-1 victories over the Bears.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Hounds scored four times in the bottom of the second in the opener for the only offense the squad needed in the game. Sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single from sophomore third baseman Holly Walter. Walter raced around the bases on an RBI double off the bat of freshman right fielder Sarah DeStefano. After a walk by sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys, junior designated player Emily Silberman connected on a two-RBI single down the left field line to bring in DeStefano and Gawrys
  • The Blue & Grey made it a 5-0 advantage with a run in the third inning. Sophomore pitcher Madi Cunningham drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a one-out double from junior shortstop Ajala Elmore. Snyder drew another walk to load the bases before junior catcher Mya Zettlemoyer ripped an RBI single to score Cunningham
  • Ursinus scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to cut Moravian's edge to 5-2
  • The Greyhounds responded in the bottom half of the sixth frame with the final run of the contest. DeStefano singled with one out and eventually crossed the plate on an RBI single from Silberman
  • Cunningham improved to 4-2 in the circle with the complete game for the Hounds that included a pair of unearned runs on two hits, and she struck out four batters while walking none 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Greyhounds took a quick 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first frame and Walter led off the inning with a double and scored on a short RBI sacrifice fly by DeStefano
  • Moravian batted around in the bottom of the second inning as the squad scored five times for a 6-0 advantage. Freshman right fielder Madison Berning started the inning with a single and raced across the plate on an RBI single from DeStefano. Elmore eventually delivered a two-RBI single to score Snyder and DeStefano while freshman catcher Marcie Silberman connected on an RBI single bringing in Gawrys. The final run of the frame came when Elmore ran home on an RBI double by sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder
  • The Blue & Grey tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it a 9-0 edge. DeStefano hit a one-out single and came around the bases when Emily Silberman hit a two-run homer into the wind in left field. Elmore reached on an error after the home run, and she scored on an RBI single up the middle by Forder
  • Ursinus scored its lone run of the second game in the top of the fourth inning
  • Moravian answered in the home half of the fourth by batting around again and scoring seven more runs. Freshman Emma Wariwanchik had a pinch hit single for Snyder to start the frame before Snyder came back in to run. Walter and DeStefano collected singles to load the bases before Gawrys drew an RBI walk to score Snyder. Emily Silberman hit an RBI single that brought in Walter while sophomore pinch hitter Ren Herschman had an RBI fielder's choice as DeStefano scored. Freshman Angelina Marino ripped a two-RBI pinch hit double down the right field line as Gawrys and freshman pinch runner Hailey Tanner both crossed the plate. Berning finished off the scoring with a two-RBI double to left center as Marino and Herschman came home
  • DeStefano improved to 4-0 in the circle as she allowed a run on four hits to go with two strikeouts in four innings of action. Senior Madison Hummel tossed the final inning for the Greyhounds

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 29 hits in the two games with DeStefano and Emily Silberman each going 5-for-8. DeStefano added five runs, three RBIs and a double while Silberman contributed six RBIs, a run and a home run, her team-leading fourth homer of the season and the 16th round-tripper of her career
  • Walter had three hits, three runs, a double and an RBI on the afternoon while Elmore recorded three hits, two runs, two RBIs and a double. Marcie Silberman also had three hits
  • Snyder posted two hits and scored three times while Forder added two hits, two RBIs and a double
  • Gawrys scored three runs and had a hit and an RBI while Zettlemoyer added a hit and an RBI. Wariwanchik contributed her first career hit while Marino had a double, two RBIS and a run and Herschman had a run and an RBI.
