Greyhounds Clinch Top Seed in 2023 Landmark Conference Tournament with Sweep of Drew to End Regular Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team swept Drew University in a Landmark Conference doubleheader to close out the 2023 season on Senior Day, winning 6-5 in 11 innings and 4-1, to clinch the top seed in the 2023 Landmark Conference Tournament. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys drew a leadoff walk before freshman catcher Marcie Silberman connected on a two-run homer to straight away centerfield for her fifth home run of the season. Sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder drew another walk, stole second and raced across the plate on an RBI single from freshman right fielder Sarah DeStefano
  • The Rangers countered with run in the sixth and three more in the top of the seventh to move ahead 4-3
  • Moravian pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Junior left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer singled with two outs, move to second on a wild pitch and raced home on an RBI single down the right field line by Gawrys
  • The game remained tied at 4-4 until the top of the 11th when the Rangers took a 5-4 edge with run
  • The Hounds answered with two runs in the bottom of the 11th and clinch the right to host the conference tournament. Junior shortstop Ajala Elmore was placed on second base for the international tiebreaker to start the frame, and she scored an error on a sacrifice bunt from DeStefano. After another sacrifice bunt from sophomore pitcher Madi Cunningham put DeStefano on third, sophomore third baseman Holly Walter lifted an RBI single to centerfield to score DeStefano with the winning run
  • Cunningham posted eight strikeouts while tossing all 11 innings to improve to 13-5 on the season in the circle
  • Prior to the game, the Greyhounds honored seniors Hailey Kortman and Madison Hummel

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Rangers took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second contest
  • Moravian got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the third to move ahead 2-1. DeStefano led off with a double, and she raced home on an RBI double off Walter's bat. Zettlemoyrer singled to move Walter to third while Gawrys drove her in with an RBI single
  • The Blue & Grey added a run in the bottom of the fourth frame as sophomore designated player Ren Herschman drew a walk with freshman second baseman Hailey Tanner coming in to run. Sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder hit an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Tanner after a single from DeStefano
  • The Hounds tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth to set the final score. Walter started the frame with a single, stole second base and scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Gawrys
  • DeStefano started in the circle and recorded five strikeouts as she improved to 13-2 on the year 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 17 hits in the doubleheader with Zettlemoyer going 4-for-8 with a run
  • Silberman was 3-for-7 with a run, two RBIs and a homer while DeStefano was also 3-for-7 with two runs and an RBI
  • Walter added three hits, two runs and two RBIs while Gawrys recorded two hits, three RBIs and a run
  • Elmore and junior designated player Emily Silberman both had a hit with Elmore scoring once
  • Snyder and Tanner both crossed the plate one time while Forder added an RBI
