Greyhounds Complete Trip to Spring Games with Split

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. --- The Moravian University softball squad split two games on its final day at the PFX Spring Games Friday, falling to No. 14 Wartburg (Iowa) College, 9-1, before defeating Carnegie Mellon University, 1-0, at the DiamondPLEX in Winter Haven.

How It Happened – Wartburg Game

  • The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, and Wartburg added two runs in the top of the second for a 3-0 edge
  • The Greyhounds pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore pitcher Madi Cunningham reached on an error to start the frame, and she moved into scoring position on a single by junior shortstop Ajala Elmore. After a sacrifice bunt from sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder, sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder hit an RBI groundout to chase Cunningham across the plate
  • The Knights scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and Wartburg added four runs in the top of the seventh frame to finish the scoring
  • Cunningham went the distance in the circle as she recorded seven strikeouts to surpass 100 career strikeouts

 

How It Happened – Carnegie Mellon Game

  • The Greyhounds scored the contest's only run in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore designated player Lindsey Gawrys drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on an error as freshman catcher Marcie Silberman. After an out, freshman first baseman Angelina Marino lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Gawrys
  • Freshman pitcher Sarah DeStefano improved to 3-0 in the circle with career high eight strikeouts in her first career shutout

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had four hits in the two games with all four in the opener as Snyder and sophomore third baseman Holly Walter had doubles and DeStefano and Elmore both connected on singles
  • Cunningham and Gawrys each scored one run on the day while Snyder and Marino both had one RBI
