Hounds Sweep Elizabethtown to Begin 2023 Landmark Conference Season

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball squad posted a sweep at Elizabethtown College Saturday, winning 4-0 and 13-1 in five innings, to begin the 2023 Landmark Conference season.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The opener was delayed by nearly an hour and a half to get the field ready after thunderstorms in the morning
  • The Greyhounds took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Sophomore pitcher Madi Cunningham led off with a single, and she moved to third on a double from sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder. After an out, junior shortstop Ajala Elmore ripped a two-RBI double to bring in Cunningham and Snyder. Elmore came home on an RBI double by junior catcher Mya Zettlemoyer
  • The Hounds scored the final run in the top of the fifth inning as freshman right fielder Sarah DeStefano singled with two outs and raced around the bases on an RBI double by freshman first baseman Lindsey Gawrys
  • Cunningham tossed a three-hit shutout in the circle for the Blue & Grey as she struck out three batters

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Moravian opened the second game with three runs in the top of the first frame. Snyder had a one-out single and scored on an RBI single by Gawrys. Later in the inning, freshman catcher Marcie Silberman connected on an RBI double to bring Gawrys home, while freshman pinch runner Brenna Beshock came across the plate on an RBI infield single from Elmore
  • The Blue Jays scored their only run of the day in the bottom of the first inning
  • The Greyhounds countered with seven runs in the top of the second to make the advantage 10-1. Freshman second baseman Hailey Tanner reached on an error to start the inning, and she scored on an RBI single from Snyder. Sophomore third baseman Holly Walter raced across the plate on a throwing error while Gawrys had an RBI sacrifice fly to bring Snyder home. Sophomore pinch hitter Ren Herschman doubled, and Silberman was hit by a pitch. After an out and sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder being hit by a pitch to load the bases, Hershman and Silberman both scored on an error. Tanner came back to the plate and connected on a two-RBI triple as Forder and freshman right fielder Madison Berning both scored
  • Moravian capped off the scoring with three runs in the top of the third inning. Silberman had an RBI double to bring Gawrys home while Elmore connected on a two-RBI single as Silberman and Hershman touched the plate
  • The squads would sit through another lightning and rain delay in the fourth inning
  • DeStefano earned her sixth win of the year in the circle with a pair of strikeouts in the complete game

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 20 hits in the doubleheader with Snyder leading the squad with a 6-for-7 day that included three runs scored, an RBI and three stolen bases
  • Elmore going 3-for-6 with five RBIs, a double and a run. Silberman had two hits, two runs, two RBIs and a pair of doubles while Gawrys added two hits three RBIs, two runs and a double
  • Zettlemoyer had a hit, a double and an RBI while Tanner added a hit, a triple, two RBIs and a run
  • DeStefano and Cunningham each had a hit and a run while Hershman had two runs, a hit and a double. Walter and junior designated player Emily Silberman also had one hit each
