DALLAS, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball squad split a non-conference doubleheader at Misericordia University Tuesday, falling 1-0 in eight innings in the opener as a seven-game winning streak was snapped before bouncing back with a 5-2 win in the nightcap to reach the 20-win plateau for the 31st time in program history.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The squads were scoreless through the seven regulation innings with the Greyhounds having a runner in scoring position just once
  • Moravian started the eighth inning with freshman second baseman Hailey Tanner on second base through the international tiebreaker but the Hounds were unable to score
  • The Cougars scored with one out in the bottom of the eighth frame to win the contest
  • Sophomore Madi Cunningham started in the circle for the Blue & Grey, and she recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts, the second time in her career that Cunningham has reached double-digit strikeouts in a game

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning in game two. Freshman first baseman Angelina Marino singled to start the inning, and she raced home from third on an error by Misericordia on a ground ball hit by sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder
  • Moravian extended the advantage to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth frame. Freshman outfielder Madison Berning led off with a single before junior Mya Zettlemoyer came in to pinch run. Zettlemoyer moved to third when freshman second baseman Emma Wariwanchik reached on an error, and Zettlemoyer ran home when the ball got away from the Cougars. Wariwanchik scored from second base on an RBI double from sophomore designated player Lindsey Gawrys
  • The Hounds stretched the edge to 5-0 with two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore third baseman Holly Walter reached on an error with one out, stole second and scored on an RBI triple by sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder. Gawrys followed with an RBI single to chase Snyder home
  • Misericordia plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to finish the scoring
  • Freshman Sarah DeStefano improved to 11-1 in the circle as she struck out six batters
  • The victory was the 20th season for first-year Head Coach Josh Baltz. It is the 31st time in 43 seasons for the program and the 29th in the last 30 years that Moravian was won at least 20 games in a season with the only team not to reach the 20-win plateau being the 2020 squad that was 9-1 when the season was cancelled by the pandemic

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 12 hits in the doubleheader with Gawrys going 4-for-6 with two RBIs and a double
  • Walter had a pair of hits and scored a run while freshman catcher Marcie Silberman added two hits
  • Snyder contributed a triple and an RBI while Marino had a hit and a run and both Berning and junior shortstop Ajala Elmore each had one hit
