Greyhounds Sweep Rival Muhlenberg on the Road

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team swept rival Muhlenberg College Thursday afternoon at Cedarcreek Field, winning 4-2 and 8-1, in non-conference action.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore third baseman Holly Walter started the afternoon with a single, and she stole second base before racing home on an RBI single by junior designated player Emily Silberman
  • The Mules answered with a run in the bottom of the first frame to tie the game at 1-1, and Muhlenberg added a run in the third inning to move ahead, 2-1
  • Moravian retook the lead with a three-run fifth inning to take a 4-2 advantage. Sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder started the frame with an infield single while junior catcher Mya Zettlemoyer and Walter drew walks to load the bases. Sophomore pitcher Madi Cunningham connected on an infield RBI single to bring in Forder while sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys ripped an RBI single to chase Zettlemoyer home with the go-ahead run. Walter eventually raced home on a throwing error by Muhlenberg
  • Freshman pitcher Sarah DeStefano made the start in the circle for the Hounds, the first time this year she has been the starter in the opening game of a doubleheader. DeStefano recorded three strikeouts in three innings of action. Cunningham tossed the final four innings for her ninth win of the year, and she also had three strikeouts 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Mules scored in the bottom of the first inning in the second contest for an early 1-0 edge
  • The Greyhounds knotted the contest in the top of the second frame when sophomore left fielder Sage Snyder drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by junior designated player Emily Silberman
  • Moravian took the lead with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Gawrys got the inning started with a single while freshman catcher Marcie Silberman drew a walk. Emily Silberman added a walk to load the bases before junior shortstop Ajala Elmore connected on a two-RBI single bringing in Gawrys and Marcie Silberman. Forder hit a single to load the bases again before freshman second baseman Emma Wariwanchik hit an RBI sacrifice fly to chase Cunningham, who had come in to run for Emily Silberman, across the plate. Walter finished the inning by driving in Elmore with an RBI single
  • The Hounds added three runs in the top of the sixth to make it an 8-1 advantage. Elmore led off with a single and moved to third when Forder was safe on an error while trying a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Ren Herschman drew a walk to load the bases before freshman Kendall Szor came in to pinch run. Freshman pinch hitter Alexa Fernandez ripped an RBI single for her first career hit, scoring Elmore while Marcie Silberman drove in Szor and DeStefano, who pinch ran for Fernandez, with a two-RBI single
  • Freshman Natalie Otto started in the circle and improved to 2-0 as she struck out five batters in four innings of work. Senior Madison Hummel tossed the final three innings for her first save of the season and first since 2020. It is Hummel's third career save

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 16 hits in the doubleheader with Walter and Gawrys both going 3-for-7. Walter scored twice and added an RBI while Gawrys contributed a run and an RBI
  • Emily Silberman was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Elmore recorded two hits, two runs and a pair of RBIs and Forder had two hits and a run
  • Marcie Silberman drove in two runs, scored once and had a hit while Cunningham had a hit, a run and an RBI
  • Fernandez and senior pinch hitter Hailey Kortman each collected their first career hits with Kortman connecting on a double in the seventh inning of the second game.
  • DeStefano, Snyder, Szor and Zettlemoyer all crossed the plate once during the contests
  • The Blue & Grey had 21 players see action during the doubleheader including 20 in game two. All four pitchers on the staff tossed at least three innings
