Greyhounds Rally Past Cabrini for 8-4 Win in 2023 NCAA Regional Opener

MEDFORD, Mass. --- The Moravian University softball team fell behind 3-0 in the first inning but rallied back to post an 8-4 victory over Cabrini University in the opening game of the NCAA Division III Medford, Mass. Regional at Tufts University Thursday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Cavaliers plated three runs in the top of the first inning on just two hits take a 3-0 lead
  • The Greyhounds got on the scoreboard and took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore third baseman Holly Walter was hit by a pitch while junior left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer and sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys drew walks to load the bases. Freshman catcher Marcie Silberman followed with a grand slam to left field for her team-leading sixth home run of the season and put the Blue & Grey ahead. Sophomore center fielder Sage Snyder drew another walk, and she moved to third on a single from junior designated player Emily Silberman. Snyder raced home on an RBI groundout from freshman right fielder Sarah DeStefano
  • Cabrini scored a run in the top of the fourth to get back within a run at 5-4
  • Moravian countered with two runs in the home half of the fourth to push the advantage to 7-4. Walter singled with one out, and Zettlemoyer walked again before Gawrys connected on an RBI double down the left field line to chase Walter home. Zettlemoyer crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by Marcie Silberman
  • The Hounds scored the final run of the game in the fifth inning. Emily Silberman drew a leadoff walk, and freshman second baseman Hailey Tanner came in to run. Tanner eventually raced home on a wild pitch

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had six hits in the game with Gawrys going 2-for-3 with double and an RBI
  • Walter was 1-for-2 and scored twice while Marcie Silberman was 1-for-4 with five RBIs and her grand slam
  • DeStefano contributed a hit and an RBI while Emily Silberman had one hit
  • Zettlemoyer crossed the plate twice and drew three walks while Tanner and Snyder both scored once
  • Sophomore Madi Cunningham improved to 16-5 in the circle as she recorded one strikeout
  • The Greyhounds are in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the 19th time, and the program is now 47-39 in NCAA Tournament play as Head Coach Josh Baltz won his first NCAA tournament game
