MEDFORD, Mass. --- The Moravian University softball squad scored the only run of the game in the third inning and made the 1-0 victory hold up over host Tufts University Friday as the Greyhounds advanced to the 2023 NCAA Division III Medford (Mass.) Regional Final.

How It Happened

  • The Hounds plated the only run of the game in the top of the third frame. Freshman pitcher Sarah DeStefano reached on an error but would be out when sophomore center fielder Jessica Forder hit into a fielder's choice. Freshman first baseman Hailey Tanner drew a walk to push Forder into scoring position before sophomore second baseman Holly Walter hit another fielder's choice that retired Tanner but put Forder on third. During junior left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer's at-bat, Walter would steal second base and, on the throw to second base, Forder raced home with the game's only run
  • DeStefano scattered two hits and allowed just one walk in her fourth shutout of the season. DeStefano also recorded four strikeouts
  • Tufts put runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and sixth innings; however, DeStefano worked out of each jam

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had four hits in the game with one hit each by Walter, Zettlemoyer, Tanner and sophomore right fielder Sage Snyder with Snyder connecting on a double
  • Forder scored the only run of the game and made four putouts in center, one to end the fourth inning, two in the fifth and the final out of the contest in the seventh with a sliding catch to seal the victory
  • The Greyhounds, who are appearing in their 19th NCAA Division III Tournament, have won their first two games of a regional for the seventh time and advanced to the regional final for the eighth time with regional titles in 2004, 2007, 2010, 2015 and 2018
